Russia’s stockpile of legacy Soviet equipment is depleting fast, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. They can’t hope to replace their losses through manufacturing alone.
This reminds me of when North Korea attacked the south. It was a suprise attack it worked excellently, but after about some months they basically started running out of stuff. The operation at that size, and pace, just wasn’t sustainable….and then the UN started arriving in force and they were done (until China turned up to help).
We are seeing the same affect here – its just on a longer timeframe. Russia can easily sustain small operations, like against Chechnya, Georgia and Afghanistan… but against a defiant, relatively large nation of 44 million… it can’t sustain the operation over a long period of time. Even with *decades* of large volumes of accumulated equipment.
