  1. Hi, I was looking for an apartment in Mainz as a student and found a very good deal with fully furnished apartments including washing machines and large sofas for 550€ (all inclusive) at Mainz-Neustadt.

I was told by the landlord that he went back to a different country after staying for a few years in Germany and that he is the owner of this apartment. He said that I could rent the apartment for as long as I want to. I then asked if I can visit the apartment physically and got this response instead.

This is the first time I’m finding a apartment in Germany as I lived in student apartments previously. I would appreciate if there any advices or people with some experience that might see something off with this reply. My senses are telling me that something is wrong.

  2. SCAM SCAM SCAM!! Do NOT send this person any money! Only you can do your own Anmeldung. The Landlord cannot do this for you.

Only with the signature of the rental contract then he gives you a (wait for this word!!) WOHNUNGGEBERBESTÄTIGUNG

which is a yellow form that YOU must bring with you to do an Anmeldung at the Rathaus. Not this guy!

Do not send any money to secure a key and esp not to one who clsims their tenant has gone overseas.

This is a classic scam. Maybe report them to the police and to where the Ad is posted.

There are plenty of Maklers and online realestate sites luke Immonet.de that can help you, it isnt always better on ebay kleinanzeigen and gumtree.

  3. This is a classic scam. As well as the old “I am not in the country” excuse, the “landord” wants to use Airbnb as a kind of escrow service. Airbnb does not offer this service, and neither does anyone else.

Do not sign a contract until you have actually seen the apartment and met the landlord. Do not transfer any money to anyone until you have the keys to the apartment, the contract has started, and you are actually able to get into the apartment.

  4. The person was also asking me to reply in English if possible in his first reply through e-mail (he says he comes from Norway) as I initially sent an email saying that I’m interested, in German since the ad title was in German.

The post is now no longer there on eBay Kleinanzeige.
