Trump moves to shutter environmental offices across the government

1. In a little over two weeks, the Trump administration has taken unprecedented steps to shutter or remake federal offices focused on the environment, causing turmoil and confusion for current and former employees.

   The latest shake-up came Wednesday, when Trump appointees at the Environmental Protection Agency notified staff members that they plan to close the Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights and place its employees on administrative leave, according to three people familiar with the matter who, like others interviewed for this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

   The tumult has also engulfed the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, a little-known yet crucial office tasked with defending the federal government’s environmental actions in court. Trump appointees recently announced plans to fire about 20 employees at the division, among other actions that have sent morale there plummeting.

   And as one of her first acts after being sworn in as [the nation’s 87th attorney general](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/02/05/pam-bondi-attorney-general/) Wednesday, Pam Bondi rescinded former attorney general Merrick Garland’s directives on environmental justice, according to a memorandum obtained by The Washington Post. Bondi also directed the heads of all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to revoke any “memoranda, guidance, or similar directive that implement the prior administration’s ‘environmental justice’ agenda.”

2. It’s absolutely enraging that this is just.. happening. Few people seem to be paying attention or care.

4. So what happens if there are environmental requirements you must meet to be legal, but there is no agency to sign off on it?

   Also… Christians are awful for the environment. They seem to take the attitude that Jesus is coming back just as soon as Trump redevelops Gaza. And the environment doesn’t matter.

5. Again, how is the president able to do this. He is not a king.

6. My organization was requested to identify all projects related to climate and environmental justice. I expect this admin will do everything they can to purge this spending, just like anything related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility.

   Once the corporations and the very wealthy get their tax cuts it will all be worth it, though. 😮‍💨

7. So can these groups create an independent organization and try to secure funds through sane billionaires? Isn’t Bill Gates and Mark Cuban somewhat concerned about the environment?

10. Maybe all this needs to happen to show that our unique brand of democracy really doesn’t work very well.

11. So Gen Z was feeling like the future was fucked up and voted for Trump in greater numbers then I would have ever expected, now the Trump administration is gonna make sure it’s even more fucked up. Good luck future generations.
