I’m sure the commentary in the British press is going to be quite calm and measured….
I’m not pro British military by any means but I do wonder how they came to that conclusion
“Big boys’ games, big boys’ rules” was the SAS attitude in the North. Caught in the act with a gun or a bomb and they’d shoot, often planned ambushes with the same goal
Just going to sit here and watch the west brits claim that the provos weren’t the same as the original IRA how all their great grandparents were real heros.
I don’t get this. Combatants, no?

Common law pretty much got suspended in a part of the UK and no one in the UK gave or gives a shit.
It was an assassination in no uncertain terms against under the letter of the law, British subjects on British soil.
I’m sure most IRA men considered it just the risks of war but it’s kinda mad the rules were totally ignored back then and no one really cared.
The very definition of ‘Fuck around and find out’.
No sympathy for them.
Why is there a need for an inquest into this? Did they not die on Active Service?
The British army really should be classified as a terrorist organization. Treat them like the criminals they are.
Different time is right. Least they went out on Asu not like the scummy dirt that shot catholic taxi drivers and kids in mobile shops.
British military and war crimes, what an unlikely duo
I don’t think many people lost much sleep considering those who were shot just arrive back from shooting up a police station.
As the law is applied, this is the correct decision and will probably piss off a few people who deserve to be pissed off.
Personally though, my own opinion on the Troubles is that if you were a combatant, you can have little complaint about being taken out. That cuts both ways, whether it was IRA men being effectively executed as in this case, or soldiers/RUC being killed by booby-trap bombs. You chose to involve yourself, and this is a consequence of that.
Could’ve told ye that back then
Basically 4 executions. Wound them then shoot them in the head. Seems they made one say his prayers or beg for his life 1st. They did the same in Gibraltar. Cowards.
Splitting hairs here. Those guys emptied a heavy machine gun into a police station with the intent to kill. I consider myself nationalist, btw. So when I say the dirty bastards met dirtier bastards, I can’t discriminate. Lie down with dogs, etc.
It might be worth adding, that the army toyed with the paramilitaries here. I’ve seen how heavily armed they really were here and how organised, too. There’s a lot of heavy duty hardware that wasn’t used, but it was well stocked behind barrack doors. They were ready to at the drop of a hat to really fuck shit up, if given the word.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
‘Shoot to killl’ Policy as Republicans.said all along.
“Mr O’Donnell was shot in the back whilst attempting to flee and then again in the face whilst lying incapacitated on the ground. Mr Clancy was shot whilst attempting to run away and then repeatedly whilst in a crouched or kneeling position on the ground.
Mr Vincent was shot whilst seated in the cab of the lorry and then again when lying incapacitated across the seat of the lorry through its open doors, while Mr O’Farrell was shot in the back whilst running away and then in the face whilst lying on the ground incapacitated.”
Well that’s murder.
The misty eyed revisionism and apologism continues.
Combatants get killed on mission shocker. More at 11.
God bless the IRA
Down with English colonialism
No sympathy. The IRA wanted a big boy war, can’t complain when the gun is turned on you.
People do realise that they were stopped at checkpoints throughout that day and let go, so more or less they were led to their deaths
As an American, it honestly seems quite strange to me to be concerned about whether these active gunmen were stopped with deadly force or captured alive. Nobody in America would think twice about this.
In all fairness to call ira gunmen “victims” is a bit rich, the British army aren’t the only people to carry out a shoot to kill policy on this island
Maybe they shouldn’t have joined the provisional IRA and used guns to attack the RUC.
Not gonna cry over those killers being killed back.
1992, so after stakeknife. They must of had another mole.
