Something is be proud of: “The Republic’s estimated excess mortality rate was 12.5 per 100,000 people, a fraction of the 131.8 recorded in Northern Ireland and 125.8 in England.”
Not a huge fan of FF or FG but when it came down to it they did really well. They listened to science, they didn’t politicise it, and they got us out the other end more or less intact. I’m not voting for either of them in next election though.
I suspect some of the spared lives were from reduced alcohol consumption and much lower car travel reducing road fatalities. But remarkable achievement nonetheless 🙂
Would have been lower and possibly lowest if we had used the Island as it should have been used instead of having 2 juristictions over health and instead of allowing in sports fans from Italy early in the pandemic without due care and attention.
Well done Tony. Give that team a medal or something. And something nice to go with it.

Vaccines work.
Draconian lockdowns helped as well.
Damn FFG! They just kept the old alive so their houses wouldn’t enter the market and keep the house prices high for investors! Damn FFG! /s
Things this doesn’t tell you:
– How many more women and children got battered at homes because they were at home all the time
– How many cancer screenings were cancelled because of the measures
– How many cancer surgeries were cancelled because of the measures
– How many other major life threatening surgeries were cancelled because of the measures
– How many other treatments/surgeries that would have improved quality of life for people were cancelled
– How much money was thrown around that we’ll have to pay back
– How many relationships broke down because of the extended period spent at home together
All in all, the media were a joke during Covid. Remember at one stage George Lee on RTE telling us about seismic sensors that measure vibrations in the earth and using that to tell us the movement of people.
When you watch films the patriots are always the men and women who head out with a gun and defend their community. It’s all very impressive and at the end the heroes get a medal.
In the pandemic the vast majority of Irish people followed the advice, wore masks, got vaccinated. Those that worked on the front line in a load of different jobs did even more, risking themselves and their health for the country.
Then there were loud mouths who ran round waving flags and insulted people in shops about wearing mask and trumpeting their patriotism as free Irish people standing up to an oppressive government.
I know which group I think did the patriotic thing and made personal sacrifice for the greater good of the Irish nation.
I know which group I think are self obsessed pieces of shit.
Well done to the Irish people who complied with the guidelines and didn’t get weary of it all.. worked
Let’s be real this thing ended because of Omicron nothing to do with our government the only reason people are happy now is because it’s over (kind of).
We get annoyed at government for things out of their control and we praise them for stuff out of their control.
People were going crazy with the government the last 2 years and now that restrictions are over everyone is happy it’s simple as that.
One of the longest lockdowns so that makes sense
Wouldn’t it a more useful comparison to have this study as a % increase versus usual death rates per 100,000? Like if ireland had a usual death rate of say 500 per 100,000 people, the excess death rate of 12.5 is a 2.5% increase?
Denmark’s excess mortality is 3x their reported, and higher than Sweden’s.

All things considered, we handled it very well.
Apart from the odd glitch here and there (and the antivaxxer/antimask types that fell to Russian influence and money)
Our population density is incredibly low compared to other countries right? Like yeah there’s six million of us but a vast majority of us aren’t all packed into one city or another. Maybe that helped us cos God knows we had our fair share of rat lickers.
Massive sacrifices by the younger proportions of Ireland can’t be ignored aswell.
Eurovision constantly told you all how well the government handled the pandemic and you all berated him and called him a shill. Now here you are contradicting yourselves and praising the government. You all owe him an apology
It’s so easy to get a test in ireland too. To be perfectly honest when I went for the holidays from the us, i was absolutely blown away. Nobody cares in america. Literally nobody. Killing the frontline workers, my mom included, in the process. It was such a breath of fresh air for them to ask for a vaccination card. I felt safe. We could easily get tests from the shops, and distance when we had to. Much respect to the people of Ireland for getting shit done. America and Britland both are slowly becoming hell. Looking forward to moving 🙂
You would hope so after pausing society multiple times for months on end
