1. The US built a similar facility to make sure that H-bombs would go off without needing to actually set off nuclear bombs. It was used for a technical demonstration that you can get above-breakeven output from nuclear fusion in this way, but completely impractical for use as a power source.

   Given that China has been engaging in a significant increase in the size of their nuclear arsenal, I’d be really surprised if this wasn’t intended as a tool for demonstrating weapons viability.

2. I’ll believe in abundant and cheap fusion power on a grid when I see it.
