Oh grow up, the UK isn’t weak just because our navy decided not to piss off an ally right now
I don’t think the Royal Navy is superficial enough to care about the name, not that Agincourt was officially it’s designation, and nothing do to with the French- it hasn’t been launched yet anyway.
If it was the public’s choice, no doubt Subby McSubFace would be up there.
It’s still a powerful nuclear-powered sub, and with it’s proper name of HMS Achilles, I’m sure it’s invincible and not analogous in the slightest to other previous bearers of that name…
The ignorance of wanting to name a vessel in service to the British Navy after a battle in which a significant part of the UK fought on the *opposing* side.
Then again, intelligence was never part of the equation.
Pft weak ? We beat Germany twice & in the world cup too
2 world wars & a world cup England!
/s
Men also used to beat their wives regularly, spend all the wages down the pub and women couldn’t vote.
Not everything ‘then’ was good…
The Agincourt was a bonkers dreadnought. It had seven (!!) turrets. And even with fourteen main guns, it couldn’t get anywhere near Warspite’s weight of fire. IIRC, we nicked a dreadnought of the same class from Brazil too? Or was it the same ship – I seem to remember there were two though.
I don’t think it had much of a history before it was removed from service.
One of the boats in the same class is already named after Nelson’s favourite ship.
To be fair the Agincourt was an absolutely awful battleship. Not sure that’s a lineage you want to live up to
You’ve shown a Dreadnought submarine there 🤓
On a real talk though is it not absolutely terrible form to have an Achilles and Agamemnon in the same class? Did nobody in the MoD or Royal Navy read the Iliad?
HMS Achillies is a more recent name – there was a Leander class frigate under that name and also a leander class light cruiser that severed with distinction during WW2, notably in the Battle of the Roiver Plate.
Whilst Agincourt is an old name commentating an historic battle, I prefer Achillies. It means more whilst maintaining a link to Mytholody.
Agincourt was from Rio de Janero
No one really cares that much, snowflake.
Wasn’t the new name approved by the King of England?
Nah, I stead we got the aptly named HMS Vengeance.
Cos that’s what she’s there for, and boy oh boy, you can get your ass she’s gonna lay it on thick if carrying a full armament!
I’m just seeing that we have nuclear subs now. That’s pretty neat
It’s hillarious that we changed the name of a nuclear Sub to not embarrass the French, yet we undercut them and sold our subs to the Australians, stealing nearly 50 Billion worth of business.
Surely that stings more?
We’re turning into France!
Hms Agincourt wasnt stolen, it hadnt been handed over and the contract for its construction specifically included a clause allowing the RN to take the ships into british service in the event of war, the ships to be returned to Turkey after the war with turkey having the choice to accept any modifications made in the interim or request their removal and a replacement vessel of equivalent power supplied to turkey in the event she was destroyed
Always loved the names of our ships.
Revenge, Repulse, Warspite, Dreadnought, Indefatigable, Vanguard, Bellerophon, Iron Duke.
It was the king’s decision, so you should say “weak king”, although it’s not really weak because “Achilles” is a cool name.
I mean, the main train station in London is called Waterloo, and there’s a station in Paris called Austerlitz. I think we’re good.
French people:
Smug over the face that they killed their own aristocracy
Also French people:
Annoyed that the English killed them too
There was only 1 person who ever wanted to the Sub to be named Agincourt in the first place. Grant Schapps and that was just to push a “Fuck the Euros” brexit agenda. The navy never wanted that name, they wanted something to link the sub to the Pacific theatre of WW2 (something no ship named Agincourt was ever part of.) and IIRC before Schapps went “Appease the Brexiteers!” it was going to be named Ajax.
The Royal Navy repeatedly requested the name change after the previous government which Schapps refused, now the new Government went “Yeah that’s a stupid name.” and the Submarine now is getting the name Achilles.
HMS sub mcsubface or riot
And you wonder why the UK has failed when this is the kind of shit you think is important.. this straight up sounds like one of Boris Johnson’s “ten big promises” as if it actually meant a shit.
I mean, even if this was accurate and mattered, it isn’t exactly earth shattering to say that when we still had access to the combined riches of multiple nations we were stronger than we are now that we don’t.
Edited due to my baffling refusal to proof read until after hitting send.
French here, whole France didn’t know and has no care about your submarine’s name
When Britain was Great
were are the other 4 you cancelled cause it was too expensive to build more than 6
Nah, we should align more with the French and move away from the US overlords.
France has been extremely fucking right about America for the last 20 years.
636 British soldiers died in Iraq and Afghanistan for nothing. We should have listed to the French and told the Americans to fuck off.
