One of the most important events on the developement of modern Christianity, European political and religious schisms and the cultivation of further individualism that shaped much of today’s ethos.
Protestant or not, one can’t neglect the significance of Martin Luther. No matter the evaluation of his works.
Subscribe to /r/500YearsAgo if you like, for updates on this ongoing Luther situation. It is definitely the best quincentennial subreddit, by virtue of being the only one.
Luther sure didn’t expect how his life and europe changes when he was nailing those theses on the church door.
Nietzsche wrote that Luther basically gave new life to a zombified version of Christianity that was already in the process of loosing its grip over Europe and hated Luther for that.
A Medici pope, the entire papal state being a whore house, the papacy actioned of to the highest bidder and other stuff.
He describes the state of the church back then as beautiful as it already lost its intellectual and spiritual primacy.
Also for him Jesus was the last actual Christian as the first thing they did when he was gone was creating a church hierarchy Jesus would have hated.
He doesn’t even have to look at them to nail them into the door. What a Chad.
This is a free day normally (in the German state Sachsen-Anhalt) , but it’s a Sunday today :(…
This year sucked because a lot of the normally free days fell on the weekend…
Martin Luther On the Jews and Their Lies 1543
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Jews_and_Their_Lies
* to burn down Jewish synagogues and schools and warn people against them
* to refuse to let Jews own houses among Christians
* to take away Jewish religious writings
* to forbid rabbis from preaching
* to offer no protection to Jews on highways
* for usury to be prohibited and for all Jews’ silver and gold to be removed, put aside for safekeeping, and given back to Jews who truly convert
* to give young, strong Jews flail, axe, spade, and spindle, and let them earn their bread in the sweat of their brow
HE also hated those damned peasants seeking their rights. They should joust obey their lords and church.

“I proclaim these 95 problems and see that a wench is not one!”
>Gleich als wenn man einen tollen Hund totschlagen muss; schlägst du nicht, so schlägt er dich, und ein ganzes Land mit dir. […] Solch wunderliche Zeiten sind jetzt, dass ein Fürst den Himmel mit Blutvergießen verdienen kann, bass, denn andre mit Beten […] Drum, liebe Herren, loset hier, rettet hier, helft hier, erbarmet euch der armen Leute, steche, schlage, würge hier, wer da kann.
It’s nice how he conveniently managed to rationalize consolidating the power of elites over the people, and the striking down of poor people’s uprisings, as Christian virtue. A literal “you can slaughter these peasants and go to heaven, don’t worry”. Like striking a misbehaving dog whom you love.
he also strongly believed in witchcraft which led to countless men and women being killed

Was there a huge celebration or event back in 2017 about this?
He was not perfect and neither was his reformation, but at large he still set the stage for what i call a “modern” christian belief system and i hold him in very high regards for that.
Ever heard of Jan Hus? He is his predecessor, but got burned at the stake for his beliefs. He was born 102 year earlier.
Luther was a flawed person to say the least (antisemitism and his stance to the peasant wars come to mind).
However Europe would be vastly different without him.
Fun fact:
Lurhers translation of the Bible was the catalyser for the development of standard german, and some argue by that also to a German identity.
They were posing there for 10 hours to make this paining happen. Huge respect.
Can anybody explain to me the main differences between Catholicism and Protestantism?
I read before that it was normal for a student theologian to post such questions in the manner that Luther did for discussion amongst fellow students and mentors. Supposedly someone printed his list for the demand for printed material for a rapidly growing population of newly literate of the printing age.
In ways I think the internet is as much a disruptor to nations as the printing press was to Christendom.
Also known as posting a Twitter rant the old-fashioned way.
I’ve got 95 theses and plenary indulgences are one of them.
I wonder how germany is always in the middle of everything.
Wie dünn er da noch war.
As I’m sure most people will be aware of, this painting doesn’t realistically depict the actual scene of the theses posting. The specific church door was already in use as some sort of a message space, a public blackboard if you will. While here we see bystanders marvelling at a confident Martin Luther, he likely just went there alone like any other person using the door for their posting and then reactions ensued while it was hanging for a while.
The entirety of the tale teaches us a valuable lesson. No ideology (religion is ideology but simply includes a deity) or dogma can go unquestioned and always has an answer or is necessarily suitable at all.
Halt! Hammerzeit!

“Fuck the church here’s 95 reasons why”
A other German responsible for countless deaths in Europe !
Joking ofc, don’t really like the man, but putting the religious wars just on him is kind off a lie.
I’ve been beating my head over a single thesis for the past three years and this mf just shows up with 95, now that’s what I would call a protestant work ethic
Me, an Irish Catholic: “So, you’re the one who caused all the bother, are you?” *Cracks knuckles with malicious intent*
“That’s bullshit, this is bullshit, fuck the church. Here’s 95 reasons why-“
Well, I hope he graduated.
So the Hussite wars don’t count into the protestant reformation?
Hey guys, It is your Boi Martin and today I give you a top 95 on why the church sucks.
*If you’re having church problems I feel bad for you, son*
*I got 95 theses and the pope has none*
