  1. ***The Telegraph reports***:

Ukrainian forces have advanced up to five kilometres behind Russian lines in a fresh assault on the Kursk border region, footage suggests.

Kyiv’s troops launched a counter-attack against Russian forces in the region at the start of the year, with hundreds of soldiers and dozens of armoured vehicles advancing on enemy lines south east of Sudzha.

Now, geolocated combat footage has shown that Ukraine’s forces are operating further behind enemy lines than previously known.

Ukraine first launched its surprise invasion of the Russian border region in August last year, seizing around 500 square miles of Russian territory.

Moscow’s troops are thought to have taken about 57 per cent of the territory back, but Kyiv has carried out waves of attacks in an attempt to regain control of the region.

The recent geolocated footage, captured by Russian drones, showed Ukrainian troops advancing across snow-covered countryside near Makhnovka and Cherkasskaya Konopelka.

Fierce fighting has been ongoing for several weeks, with analysts reporting that [Ukraine had taken several towns](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/01/06/ukraine-is-humiliating-putin-at-the-worst-possible-moment/) in the region, including Kolmakov and Fanaseyevka.

Kremlin-affiliated military bloggers have expressed concern that Ukraine’s latest advance could compromise Russian positions in Guyevo, south of Sudzha, where troops have been able to interrupt Ukrainian ground lines of communication.

The Russian military of defence claimed Ukraine had attacked with two mechanised battalions’ worth of armoured vehicles and that Moscow’s forces had repelled the assault.

The ministry said on Telegram: “As of 2100 (6pm GMT), units of the North group of forces have thwarted an attempted counter-attack by the Ukrainian armed forces aimed at the settlements of Cherkasskaya Konopelka and Ulanok.”

The Russian “milbloggers” estimated that Ukraine attacked with 30 to 50 armoured vehicles, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank.

The footage emerged as Volodymyr Zelensky marked six months since the start of Ukraine’s daring cross-border incursion.

The Ukrainian president said on Thursday: “We have brought the war home to Russia. That is where they must feel what war truly means. And they do.”

Mr Zelensky said the offensive had allowed his troops to establish a buffer zone, protecting its northern cities Sumy and Kharkiv, which border Russia and are not far from Kursk.

  2. Already read something about it this morning. Russians say they repelled the attack. So that means they are advancing and the Russians are scrambling in panic.

  3. Definitely preferable to fight Ru on their own land, let them bomb their own cities rather than Ukraine.

  4. Still waiting for a very lomg time that a front collapses and Ukraine take a huge chunk out of Russia

  5. ill believe it when someone reports it, non of the maps have anything reported
