U.K. orders Apple to let it spy on users’ encrypted accounts. The British government’s undisclosed order, issued last month, requires blanket capability to view fully encrypted material, not merely assistance in cracking a specific account, and has no known precedent in major democracies.

  1. Labour up to their authoritarian tricks again. At least it’s not 3 months detention without charge and the evidence against you being kept from your defence cuz ” national security” when it’s used against you in a military court. This time…

  2. Starmer has learned nothing he must want to be a one term PM

  3. Surely apple could afford to lose the UK market. People would be furious, but Apple would win in the end, people have more loyalty to Apple than they do Labour.

  4. The same Starmer who wants to implement more facial recognition and tracking of us.

The irony of this cunt being a human rights lawyer!

  5. And people thought that Labour would be better….
    Morons.

  6. It really sounds like what happens in the States, ever since the post-9/11 *Patriot Act* allowed the N S A to eavesdrop on, and by extension hack into, the personal electronic communications of US citizens, and US allies. But it’s not generally advertised by the government. Oopsies!

  7. Specific accounts for a specific period to look for specific evidence, then yes. This, no.

  8. No way this will stand up in the Supreme Court or ECHR.

  9. I would be happy if apple let the pedo monitoring software work on their phones

  10. How many “ThIs iS lIke ComMunIsM” replies on twitter?

  11. Wild that they don’t look at things like this and realise the powers they want for (apparently) “good” reasons will be used against us all by the jackbooted Nazi’s well all happily vote into power sometime in the next 10 years.

  12. Two tier Kier wants access to your phones.

Here’s the news though – Apple encryption can already be broken by Digital Forensics teams in the police. They just use some expensive and powerful hardware and software to do it.

  13. It’s like they read 1984 as an instruction manual instead of a warning

  14. Unbelievable an intolerable invasion of our privacy when we need more privacy, not less

1984 and big brother is truly watching you

  15. Don’t think if you were still in the EU this would happen.

  16. I disagree with this legislation.

But if Apple pull out of the UK?  9 million in taxes on 1.1 *billion* in revenue last year.

They’re robbing us.  Bin the legislation *and* Apple.

  17. “I have nothing to hide” lot will cost us dearly.

  18. Two tier Kier, Starmer the granny harmer, wants to kill free speech and control every aspect of our lives.Who would have thought it?

  19. I’m not against us legislating against folk involved in CSAM and other dark crimes just buying iPhones because their data is safe.

As usual there’s a difference between “the government want to spy on your data” and apple being the choice of pedos and organised crime

  20. Haha, I’ve got an Android!

    *checks Google privacy policy*

    Baws.

  21. Fucking hell: The law, known by critics as the Snoopers’ Charter, makes it a criminal offense to reveal that the government has even made such a demand

Apple can appeal the U.K. capability notice to a secret technical panel

Apple would be barred from warning its users that its most advanced encryption no longer provided full security

  22. If they can access the data, they can exfiltrate/manipulate it as they see fit and use the manipulated data as evidence against you for potential crimes that you haven’t committed. Think about that scenario, and the possibilites it could lead to. How would you prove your innocence?. Classic Man In The Middle attack.
