European Capitals by City Emblem

  1. I really dislike this visually, that some of the emblems are so much bigger then others. Seems like Helsinki and Moscow are the most important cities in Europe.

  2. For those that want backstory for Oslo’s seal:

The one for Oslo is Saint Hallvard, that was killed with three arrows (held in his left hand) while he tried to protect a pregnant slave woman accused of theft (the (sometimes) unclothed one by his feet). The murderers tried to hide the body by drowning/sinking him, but he floated so they had to use a millstone (held in his right hand), but didn’t help as he floated anyway and was found by his family. (A different time and place and all of this would be witchcraft and not saint like.)

He was also related to Saint Olav that christianized Norway, and his grave was said to glow and smell sweetly and other stuff. Combined with his selfless act of protecting the innocent(?) he was turned into the guardian saint of Oslo.

  3. just to say the “city of” London isnt actually the UK capital, that would be Greater London

the city of London is basilcy a mini city encased by Greater London

  4. FYI: The XXX in Amsterdam’s coat of arms is totally SFW and dates back to the 13th century. It’s not like the city hired some marketing firm and went “Well, we’re basically Disneyland for adults, so we might as well own up to that reputation.”

  5. London itself doesn’t have an emblem since the Greater London council was dissolved in the 80s. The new Greater London Authority hasn’t created a new emblem yet.

The city of London whilst being the oldest borough isn’t the whole of London and shouldn’t be considered the emblem of London. It isn’t where Government sit either, if any London borough were to be used it should be the City of [Westminster ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Westminster) since that’s where the House of Commons & Lords sit.

  6. The City of London isn’t London. It may be where the name comes from but is completely separate from the London boroughs that make up most of London. The coat of arms for the city of Westminster would probably be a better fit, it’s where the Queen and the PM lives and is where Parliment is too.

  7. The City of London isn’t the capital. The whole of London is the capital city. City of London is just a tiny borough in London. If anything the City of Westminster would be the capital as it is the seat of parliament, the cabinet and the monarch.

  8. The Emblem of Rome also has a crown: [link](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ang/2/24/Coat_of_arms_of_Rome.png)

There is a beautiful representation of it on the ceiling of the Santa Maria in Aracoeli’s church: [link](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/Stemma_di_Roma_in_S._Maria_in_Aracoeli.JPG)

Also, it is interesting to have a look at the Coats of Arms of the historical districts (Rioni) of Rome: [link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rioni_of_Rome#Coat_of_Arms_of_the_modern_rioni)
