  4. Well, this is unsettling.. I just celebrated getting my Canadian citizenship (I’m from Europe), and now there’s an invasion pending… I had no plans to become American.

  8. Americans seem to think this would be incredibly easy. Like they could take canada in an afternoon by drone striking them and face no casualties themselves. But I’ll remind them that Canada is the second largest country in the world, with geography similarly difficult to that of Russia between the rocky mountains, the Canadian shield, and the frigid arctic. The plan for the military defense of Canada has always been fighting guerilla warfare, not direct combat. Americans would face warfare on their own soil like never before seen and would suffer many casualties. Even if they just used economic means, sure it would be devastating, but Canada would still survive by just forging new economic relationships in Asia and with the EU for the next 4 years.

    Canada fought side by side with America in the trenches of WW1, the beaches of Normandy – and even took over the counter-insurgency fight against the Taliban in Kandahar.

  12. What it’s scary is that Trump is seeing that no one has stepped up to defend Ukraine in combat. The “consequences” Russia is getting for the war, Trump can live with it. If Trump invades Canada, no one will come to fight the US. It’s all talk, and Trump knows this. The EU will not come to Denmark’s rescue if Trump invades Greenland. It’s scary because Trump is willing to bet on himself. And we will all lose.

Canadian here, just wanted to issue an open invitation to the Royal Navy to drop over with a few ships, the HMS Prince of Wales would be nice to see in say Halifax, and I hear that the crew of HMS Vigilant would love to visit Vancouver. Of course we don’t want to leave France out so maybe Le Terrible could visit Montreal? Maybe stay for the Grand Prix.

    If I recall correctly we are overdue for military exchanges with Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland, Denmark, Poland, and gee just about all of our NATO allies in Europe. Best to have them all come over here first for a nice long stay.

  29. IEurope, Canada and many other western aligned countries will do better against Trump by acting in response together. If Trump imposes a tariff on one, all respond with higher tariffs. Trump is a bully, they all fold in the face of more force.

  33. Threatening our closest ally and biggest trade partner is a national embarrassment and Canada doesn’t deserve to be trusted this way. But one funny upside to the possibility though, the Republicans would never win another election. They’d be adding roughly equivalent electoral votes as another California. Liberal politicians would win in a landslide from then on and it would likely be enough difference in congress to oust Trump and undo the annexation immediately. Or better, vote to rename it the United States of Canada.

  38. Why has this talk of annexing Canada not been addressed by the UN, NATO, the EU, King Charles, the rest of the Commonwealth countries, and the others? This is a not a “joke” and it is not “rhetoric”. Trump needs to be told, officially and publicly, by all these governments and organizations that this sort of talk will NOT be tolerated, and will result in immediate and drastic sanctions against the US.

    Same goes for Greenland and Panama.

    Trump might know how to make a deal but he’s fucking useless at knowing people. Slow societal shifts put him in power and the same thing will culturally isolate the US for a generation.
