‘All bluster and no teeth’: UK is ‘weak link’ allowing Russian oligarchs to dodge sanctions

  1. The mantra this week has been for every government minister to preface every interview they have given about the crisis with the words, “We have been leading on this…” its bullshit every fucking word.

  2. Only last week was it considered political point-scoring to point this problem out but some people were desperate to say now is not the time to talk about the Tories’ links to Russia. Now is very much the time to be discussing these links as it is clear that, while the Tories do not support the invasion of Ukraine, they are too dependent on Russia to be fully independent from them at the moment. They are giving Russians a nice warning to get their assets out of the UK as best as possible before they are sanctioned. It is clear that the UK will be open to Russian business as normal once all this is over if the Tories remain in power by then.

  3. This has always been the way of the Conservatives until it comes to the poor and less well of then it is Fuck you pay now. To Russian oligarchs please give us a bung and we will give you plenty of time and maybe a knighthood or two.

  4. Fuck this government. The British people have been putting up with this kind of shit for a few years now – slogans, promises, spin – all without action.

  5. And the BBC ran stories about Abramovich trying to sell his assets. Who needs rightmove when the BBC is basically advertising for you.

  6. Our major exports are financial services, and our economic “growth” is entirely dependent on increasing house prices. Our country is completely dependent on the whims of rich foreigners, which massively limits our effective sovereignty.

  7. Conservative voters seem almost like football fans these days, nothing their team does ever really puts them off.

The manager Boris has to go of course, but once he has then it’s plain sailing once again…

  8. > A small number of officers have been moved from other duties to work in the unit and plans are moving forward “at pace”, the Home Office said

Ahh yes. I know this one well.

Boss: Erm u/bazpaul do you mind helping out in this kleptocracy unit for a few weeks

Me: hmmm i suppose but who will cover my work while I’m over there

Boss: oh there is no one to cover your work, can’t you do both?

Me: No the workload from both teams would be too much

Boss: oh don’t worry there won’t be much if any workload from the kleptocracy team, we just need to be seeing to do something

    ***boss winks and walks off***

  9. UK left the EU largely with the help of Russian fake news propaganda, now we are returning the favour.

  10. I’m starting to think Boris and co are going to keep the Oligarchs sheltered (aside from a few politically expedient gestures), while at the same time supplying arms and equipment to Ukraine in an effort to ‘look hard’ on Russia while keeping their rich mates sweet. I can’t find another explanation for the apparent enthusiasm on one hand and reluctance on the other. Keep the money guys sweet, but let some Russian pilots, tank drivers and squaddies get the bad news for appearances sake. Maybe I really am a conspiracy theorist.
