A real icon of the early days of devolution and someone who proved himself to be less interested in partisan politics and willing to cooperate.
Between him and Baroness Randerson passing last month two of the pioneers of the Senedd’s early days are gone.
Awww. That’s a shame. He was lovely in the Lords.
Just read his obituary on the BBC news website and I think it’s interesting how every time he “clashed bitterly”, “ignited furious debate” or “provoked a furious reaction”, he was often right. Always the sign of a life well lived if you’re on the right side of any controversies that are brought up in your obituary.
I wrote to him about dialogue with Sinn Fein in I think the early 80s when he was first an MP, and had a detailed and courteous reply.
He gave me his business card and told me I should get into politics after a mock assembly session back in the days before the senedd and the new building.

May he rest in peace.
He wrote the original foreword for Socialism For The Welsh People: https://welshundergroundnetwork.cymru/2023/05/13/socialism-for-the-welsh-people-2023-edition/

I haven’t, yet, but it meant a lot to me.
