Lately, I’ve been sharing hidden gems beyond Lisbon—places like Agroal, Castelo de Bode, and the Mira de Aire Caves. These spots aren’t just beautiful; they hold a special meaning for me. Before moving to Lisbon, I grew up near Fátima, and these places were part of my weekends, my adventures, and my connection to nature and history.

One of the places that always fascinated me was Almourol Castle—a fortress that feels straight out of a legend.

A Castle Built by the Knights Templar
Sitting on a tiny island in the middle of the Tagus River (Rio Tejo), near Vila Nova da Barquinha, Almourol Castle was built in the 12th century as part of a defensive line protecting Portugal’s borders. Its isolated location and thick stone walls made it nearly impenetrable—a true medieval stronghold.

Why is it special?
✔️ Only accessible by boat, making it feel like a secret fortress.
✔️ 360° panoramic views over the river and lush landscapes.
✔️ Legends of a lost Moorish princess said to haunt the castle.

📍 How to Visit?
To reach Almourol, take a boat from the pier near Vila Nova da Barquinha. It’s an easy day trip from Lisbon and a must for history lovers and those seeking a hidden gem beyond the usual tourist spots

  1. I once canoed from Constância down the river and around Almourol, incredible way to see the castle.
