Would someone care to explain to me the double-standard being applied here ? (as absurdly unjust that standard is)

  1. I -believe- the jewellery law was to dissuade unwelcome immigrants (read Muslims) from settling in Denmark instead of other places, thus stopping Quality-of-life refugees from coming here instead of just war refugees… but as the first article stated, it is an inhumane and degrading law, and I don’t think Denmark would like the scrutiny and ridicule of the international community this law would bring in the current situation. It would be seen as completely heartless (which it is)

  2. Treat people different because they actually are different. Isn’t that the most fair way

  3. Ukraine is close to us. Coming to Denmark from Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq, you’d have to pass several safe countries.

  4. I guess we expect Ukrainians to return to Ukraine at some point.

We regard Ukraine as a close enough place that they have nowhere else to go.

    They don’t flee poverty.

We generally don’t fathom why refugees from predominantly Muslim countries can’t seek shelter in a predominantly Muslim country, and thus they are stigmatized as someone fleeing for predominantly economic reasons. And we generally don’t like that.

  5. The jewelery law was passed to dissuade MENA immigrants from coming to Denmark.

The law is likely not going to be applied to Ukrainian refugees because these are not unwanted in Denmark.

  6. I recall an article a couple of years after the law was made that said it had been used exactly once – has that changed since? Is suspending it now for the Ukrainians just good PR by doing what we’re already (not) doing?

  7. How come there is atleast one of the garbage posts a day? All it does is try to divide people and create disdain for the danish people/government. Do you even live in Denmark?

  8. I guess we’re just data driven.

It’s not like people from MENA have shown themselves overwhelmingly willing to integrate, respect their hosts, and not establish parallel societies.

  9. It’s a stupid law, from a time where any obstacle “is better than none”.

The law hasn’t even been used once, which clearly shows its pointless existence.

But it’s clear that we have massive issues with culture clashes in the west, MENAP cultures, and their values has shown themselves to be adversary to democracy, womens and lgbt rights, which in and of itself makes it incompatible with Danish culture.

If you are fleeing for your life, to your gay neighbours house, if you continue to insist that he should be locked up for his way of life, you cant be surprised he doesn’t let you in.

  10. Based on your comments in this thread, it is clear that you are already biased towards thinking that the law is racist and that you do not care about getting an actual answer to your question.

    Grow up.

  11. 1. Unlike with Syrian crisis, majority of Ukrainian refugees are actual people in danger : women, children, elderly. Not young conscript age men like with MENA. Men 18-60 are barred from exiting Ukraine.

    2. Syria crisis made little sense : at the height of Mediterranean route activity, in best months for the cause actual Syrians made up around half of incoming stream. The rest were people from all over, and no conflict back then : Bangladeshi, African, Iraq, Iran.

    3. Point 2 + fact that people threw away passports + extreme left influence and media in Europe meant that deportation of those unfit for asylum is extremely hard. Not the case with Ukrainian refugees

    4. MENA refugees did not want asylum, they wanted welfare shopping : they did not accept Baltic countries shelter because salaries there are lower and social safety net/welfare is minimal. Again not the case with Ukrainian refugees, they do not snub at Romania because they are less developed than Western Europe and you can’t live off welfare well.

    5. Employment rate : many Ukrainian refugees want to work and earn money, instead of being given handouts. And again, cultural proximity, language proficiency, better education result in Ukrainians being more competent workerforce.

    6. Canada has biggest Ukrainian diaspora in the world. I’m yet to hear about them organising parallel societies or acts of terrorism.

    7. Ukrainian crisis was in part financed by Western leniency towards Russia caused by gas and oil dependency, enabled by German undersea gas pipelines. So there is moral guilt component too.
Syrian crisis was caused by bloody Russian puppet dictator trying to contain Arab Spring induced revolution.
