Duchess Sophie just took a page out of Kate Middleton’s fashion handbook during her latest royal outing.
During day four of the royal tour of Nepal, Duchess Sophie visited the British Gurkha Camp to watch the attestation parade, which celebrates the long-standing relationship between the U.K. and Nepal. The 60-year-old royal opted against her go-to stilettos and wore shoes with an espadrille wedge.

The footwear choice was likely inspired by the location, since the ground was primarily grass. The shoes gave her a little height without sinking into the lawn, so I’d consider that a win.

This isn’t the first time that a member of the royal family has switched up their footwear based on the outing. Last month, Princess Catherine stopped by a Welsh charity called Tŷ Hafan, which is dedicated to helping families and children with life-shortening conditions. Since part of the visit included walking on grass, Princess Catherine opted against her go-to stilettos and, instead, wore a chunky heel.
Many believed that she wanted to avoid a mishap like her mom, Carole Middleton. Last year, the royal’s mother attended a horse racing event dubbed the Royal Ascot. Carole was momentarily barefoot when the heel of her shoe got stuck in the grass. Several people dashed to help her—including her son-in-law, Prince William.
Thank you, Duchess Sophie, for reminding me to break out my espadrilles this spring.
