It didn’t take long for the doubts to creep in. Shortly after he arrived home to Dublin following Ireland’s latest World Cup quarter-final defeat in Paris, Johnny Sexton began to face up to the reality of what came next.

Having brought the curtain down on his illustrious 18-season career, walking away from the sport that had defined him for so much of his life, Sexton could no longer call himself a professional rugby player.
