Bulgaria to make €500m from military aid to Ukraine

   Bulgaria stands to receive about €500 million (£415 million) from its military support to Ukraine over the past three years.

   “By helping Ukraine, we are actually helping ourselves,” [Atanas Zapryanov](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/01/11/ukraine-russia-war-live-north-korea-nuclear-missile/), the defence minister, said.

   Sofia benefited from about €300 million in compensation from the [United States](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/02/06/donald-trump-plan-end-war-ukraine-kellogg-munich-russia/) and the European Commission for sending [Soviet-era](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/01/26/israel-sends-weapons-captured-from-lebanon-to-ukraine/) military hardware to Kyiv.

   It also received €174 million from [Denmark ](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/02/18/denmark-gives-all-weapons-artillery-ukraine-support-eu/)as part of two contracts to support Ukraine’s military in its struggle against the [Russian invasion](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/russia-ukraine-invasion-live/).

   Eastern European countries with arsenals of Soviet-era weapons became crucial in the [West’s military support](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/09/12/the-west-is-running-out-of-time-to-save-ukraine/) for Ukraine.
