Haiti under siege: ‘Just when we think situation has reached rock bottom, it deteriorates further’

More than $13 million in U.S. funding for an international security force helping fight armed gangs in Haiti has been frozen under President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on foreign aid, the United Nations said on Tuesday. Powerful gangs, armed with weapons largely trafficked from the United States, have united in the Caribbean country’s capital Port-au-Prince under a common alliance and now control most of the city and are expanding to nearby areas. For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective, FRANCE 24’s François Picard is joined by Diego Da Rin, Analyst in Haiti for the International Crisis Group.

  1. I think funding is important, but now that it is clear that the USA's foreign aid policy is partisan and very very unstable, it is appropriate to open the conversation of France footing this bill and meaningfully lending Haiti a helping hand. Haiti really needs an intentional and honest aid/reconstruction effort for the sake of the country's innocent people.

  2. Even though the people are basically living in a war zone they keep having children.
That is an incredibly cruel thing to do to their children.

  3. To be honest. Haiti does not need to fall due to a lack of $13 million. The European Union or someone else, even some Latin American countries could stand in, for the time being. In the medium run the US will resume financing operations in Haiti, as they'll feel pretty uncomfortable with other powers playing such a big role in the Western Hemisphere.

  4. Yea this is not good , The Haitians will not stop fighting for what they believe. and the international community wont stop fighting to reach a result that they deem acceptable. the major problem is they Haitian people are willing to sacrifice the peace of their Own people in order to establish whatever life they are looking to establish. this is a very bad situation because they seem to go against all forms of internal government that's established while also defining international institution of government. That is recipe for collapse because both sides are willing to take it to the extreme.

  5. When the international community helped get rid of JC Duvalier they created a disaster of which we see the result today. They have a huge responsability in what happened and should be present and help this country by not donating funds but by coming to built schools, hospitals, roads and make sure this way that the corrupted governements do not steal the money anymore. This place could be a fantastic touristic destination that would bring jobs and permit the people to have a decent living. Santo Domingo did it why could Haiti not do it? Oh and they have tremendous artists and crafts too!

  6. Nobody wanted to hep Haiti to stop the gangs violence because they made more money like that with the gangs violence this a big corruption they don't have any interest to solve the crisis It's a completely scenario.

  7. Haiti it's the number one corrupt country in the world, you can't trust anyone in that country. Everyone corrupt in the sad part they so proud of being corrupt..

  8. Do you know how big Haiti is there is a lot of other cities not affected by the violence. It’s not to whole island over run by gangs. With the money or not it will be difficult for police to get control. If Haitians as slaves ran French out. You think these police forces can do anything is crazy. Look how quick Trump want to help Gaza but I guess Haiti as nothing that USA can benefit so it’s a after thought

  9. The problem is not money it’s strong leadership. sending more money will not help the people, because politicians will keep the money to themselves.

  10. Meanwhile America has mining companies digging our wealth all over the country and stealing billions….Haiti will rise again✊🏿🇭🇹

  11. 13 million dollars huh…that could sure help homeless and hungry Americans,. Gotta look out for your own before you help everyone else!
