Most kids love dressing casually in things like Spider-Man t-shirts and flip-flops, but those just aren’t appropriate for the royal family. Cute, smocked shirts and dungarees or dresses with matching peacoats are more up to speed for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s kids Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6. Even their casual clothes are elegant and understated! And while we love admiring their outfits (why are kids so darn cute in fancy clothes?), we do sometimes wonder if the kids ever feel like they can truly be kids in outfits like these. Recently, a royal designer just gave us the answer. She revealed one objective she uses when creating clothes for royals, including George, Charlotte, and Louis, and it makes so much sense.

Rachel Riley, a children’s clothing designer who has seen many of her designs on the Wales siblings, told Express that she started her business over 25 years ago to make “beautiful things” for her own children. And one of her priorities? Making clothes that were lovely to look at and comfortable to wear.
“While it’s always fun to dress all children, it is particularly rewarding as a designer and business owner when the royal children wear our clothing,” Riley told the outlet. She went on, “Not only do they look great, they also seem very comfortable wearing them, which is what all children should feel like when wearing our clothes.”
Yes! It’s one thing for the royals to be all dressed up, but another that their clothes are actually comfortable enough to enjoy wearing. And according to Riley, the Wales must love her clothes because the royal kids have worn them on 22 occasions!

Riley explained, “The clothing that we design is relevant to each stage that children go through. Personally, it is always fun for me to see children in babysuits when they are babies, dungarees when they are crawling and then a shirt and shorts set or a cute dress when they are walking. This reflects a lot of the styles the Royal children have worn when they were babies and toddlers.”
Whether they are attending Trooping the Colour to celebrate the monarch’s birthday or giving back to the community, the royal kids always have the perfect outfit. And now we know that their clothes make them feel good too!
Recently, Middleton visited a clothing company that specializes in handmade socks and knitwear. While there, she revealed that she “archived” all of her kids’ clothing that they no longer wear, per Hello! Magazine. She also praised the fact that well-made garments “wore really well” on her kids compared to other types of clothes. “It’s so lovely to reuse the things that are well made,” Middleton added.
Maybe it’s time to start switching up the kinds of clothes we buy for our own kids! Looking nice, feeling good, and lasting for ages is the new royal standard!
