It’s ironic, councils have private rented sector licensing teams who carry out inspections on private landlords – set ambitious targets and over the top recommendations for improvements – yet council themselves have awful living standards and conditions in their own backyard.
People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones… as they say!
Newham Council recently received a C4 rating from the housing regulator, the worst possible rating, their properties are deemed to be in the absolute worst condition – yet they have a licensing teams that heavily scrutinise landlords and make them the ‘bad guys’… what a joke.
The London Mayors talks big, talks about rent caps, why don’t they start the pilot with their own shitty council homes?! Those rents are at market rate if not higher, in many instances higher than what the private landlords charge as a well behaved manageable tenant is a God send who you don’t want to upset!
“When she and five-year-old Aziyah moved into their home in Brighton in 2020, it seemed in good condition. But black mould quickly began to appear. Over the next two years it spread all over the walls, even onto the beds and furniture.
The 25-year-old, who privately rents for £1,100 a month, initially reported it to her landlord, but despite their attempt to improve ventilation, the problem remained.”
Maybe the problem is the tenant, not the landlord.
Had she thought of moving?
Non dom landlord contact is impossible… Like genuinely pointless until it’s about bills or money they’re owed..

And the council (literally all of them) are guilty of the exact same thing.
