Google Maps changes name of #GulfofMexico after #Trump executive order • FRANCE 24 English
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. He issued the name change as part of a series of executive actions hours after taking office, fulfilling a campaign promise.
Google Maps has officially updated the name within the US, while in Mexico, it will remain the “Gulf of Mexico.”
This distinction is based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which states that a country’s territorial sea extends only up to 12 nautical miles (22 km) from its coast.
