Mexico’s energy mix relies heavily on U.S. natural gas and this situation is unlikely to change, even given the current tense bilateral relationship, according to one expert.

“Not even during times of peak demand for Russian natural gas supply from Europe did any country receive as much natural gas from one source as Mexico receives from the U.S. currently,” said Juan Roberto Lozano Maya, a specialist in Mexico’s energy sector. “The situation in Mexico is totally atypical. And for that reason, I think it’s a really large risk to rely so much on one partner, and I think the Trump Administration is totally aware of this over-reliance and dependency.”
In his current role at Mexico’s power dispatch operator Cenace, Lozano founded the Institutional Affairs Unit, which he has led since 2016 to address the organization’s international and governmental affairs.
