‘Finland will join NATO’ – former Finnish PM Alexander Stubb

  1. Literally the worst defeat of Russia from this war would be the accession of Finland and Sweden in NATO

+the destroyed economy and diplomatic isolation ofc

  2. Don’t say it out loud! Our other politicians have been using tactical truths like “now is not the time” and “we will have serious discussions.”

  3. Okay, well, let’s see. Right now we’ve been yapping about the “Nato option” for 30 years. At this pace our politicians could be stuck in a traffick jam of Russian tanks and still be babbling about dialogue and discussion.

Of course I’ll be pleasantly surprised if our leaders are working overtime to actually start preparing for the joining, but yeah, it’s not like we just waltz in whenever we see suitable. Also extremely worried if we’re joining without Sweden because we need to stick together. Not saying I’m an expert and that there isn’t a lot of nuances but honestly don’t know how much time we have.

  4. That’s nice, but I think those words don’t have any weight unless pronounced by someone who is the current finnish PM.

  5. Former PM, who has campaigned for joining NATO his whole career. I wouldn’t take his word at face value (as a Finn).

  6. Oh no, looks like some oppressed Russians were just found in Finland. Putin and his Zombies better free them from Nazi-Fascist Finns.

  7. I think he’s right. I think definitely the outcome of the analysis and discussion going on in Finland at the moment will be applying for the membership.

The big question mark is Sweden. Will they do it with us or will Finland just apply without them – for years the conventional thinking has been that if we ever joined NATO we would do it at the same time with Sweden.

But now I think it’s a real possibility Finland might make the decision and apply before Sweden.

  8. Stubb tweeting idiotic comments from Brussels? What else is new?

If there is any justice in the world, Finnish history will not be kind to Alexander Stubb. I’m sorry for getting personal but he even looks like some kind of rodent native to Finland’s climate.

  9. If you try to comment something under title which start “former” please don’t. Use your current title/position or don’t just comment.

  10. Having Finland and Sweden in NATO is a huge win for NATO. Both strong military countries joining the pact.

  11. Anyone but actual governments (and people) are saying Sweden and Finland will join nato.
    So basically no one important.

  12. Based on what finnish politicians are saying and what has been unsaid I’m certain that Finland will apply to join. The war in Ukraine has been a big awakening not only for politicians but also for general population. Denial of reality is subsiding and people are realizing that Russia is existential threat to Finland. Always has been, always will be. Understanding this is winning the popular misconception of what NATO actually is. A lot of people have this misconception that NATO is some imperialistic war machine (Russia has been influencing Finland’s political landscape for a long time).

For the last month the finnish politicians have played this process well. Most importantly politicians haven’t shown signs of being afraid. Not running around like a madman screaming NATO but also not being silent and avoiding the subject. Both would make us look weak and afraid. We know in Finland that you can’t show weakness to Russia. Russia preys on weakness.

Long story short. Prepare your butts other NATO countries. We’re coming in hot. It might be a bumpy ride.

  13. This guy is very eloquent and speaks quite on point without wasting time.
    A classic no-nonsense Finnish person.

  14. Oh dear mr Stubb, just please wont you just shut up already. We already moved you to europe so nobody would care what you are doing or saying.. but this, this is just unbearable.. please, please be silent. You silly silly person.
