Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday a plan to boost natural gas production from state-owned oil and gas firm Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to 5 Bcf/d by the end of her six-year term.

Mexico’s energy minister Elena Luz González and Pemex CEO Victor Rodríguez Padilla joined the president at the conference to discuss how the firm would raise output from current levels of about 3.3 Bcf/d.
“Our geology is old,” Rodríguez said, noting that the national oil company’s goal was on “focused drilling.” Pemex would drill 269 exploratory wells in six strategic areas in the Mexican southeast onshore, as well as offshore in the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).
