Remember when Soho was a thriving late night scene?
If only there was some sort of organisation who had the ability and responsibility to take steps to preemptively reduce criminal activity….
Ah the old jazz crime. Lovely bit of time travelling.
The Met objects to anyone being outside of their home past 10pm. Their job would be a lot easier if there was a curfew.
Someone’s been reading too many Ben Aaronovitch books at the Met. I didn’t know they could read.
Isn’t it the Met’s job to ensure people aren’t vulnerable late at night?
> may become a target for illegal taxis who “prey on vulnerable, intoxicated lone females”, as well being targeted for mobile phone snatches.
Fix the fucking problem then.
All I can imagine are hilarious jazz crimes, like someone having a tuba jammed over their head, and making sad tuba noises with every footstep.
It doesn’t seem as if they claim anything about the club will cause more crime other than there being people leaving a venue at night. So they’re trying to reduce crime not by tackling the causes but by just getting people to stay at home so they can’t be robbed.
Fantastic work.
It was trying to take over gymbox, surely that would lead to too many more vulnerable people on the street as anyone out in that area getting a night bus home would be 2 minutes away in trafalgar Sq anyway?
Niiice…
‘Jazz clubs cause crime’ is some **very** old school racism.
This has got to stop, where statutory bodies can object to the legal activities of citizens just because it might inconvenience them.
I can understand someone complaining because someone wants to open a club next to their family home, but this is next level NIMBYsm. Police screaming about, *’won’t someone think of the crimes that might (but have not) been committed’.*
And they damned well know it’s provocative, if you call their shit out they’ll just go, *’So, you like stabbin’s and murder then, do you, DO YOU?’.*
Asking the police is insane. Of course they’re going to say no.
An increase in Jazz-Time will lead to an increase in Jazz-Crime!
it’s the age old jazz club -reefer madness syndrome that MP’s have in their jelly brains.
Because Jazz fans are known to be a bit dodgy!! Wtf!! This is why London night life is dying, I object to the Met having the last say on these matters, a bunch of middle-aged white men, with no regard for the culture of the city they work in! Ffs
The police are supposed to protect the public, not shut down their freedoms
Such a shame that we have roving gangs making it inherently dangerous to be outside at 1am and we can’t do anything about them. Maybe we could set up some sort of organisation where paid employees could patrol around and prevent illegal activity occurring?
The year, 1920… The city, London…
I’m going to take this opportunity to post Jazz Crimes by Joshua Redman:
From small scale like venues opening late in London to large projects like railways this needs to stop. No wonder our economy is stagnant when so many groups have a veto on anything happening.
Just read the article. What a joke. ‘We can solve the crime problems in the area so best to not have anyone there’
Fuck the police.
I’m glad you posted this, I was so confused when I read this last night.
We can’t go see a jazz band in central London at midnight because we may be a victim of crime? What?
They’re using this as a cover reason surely?
Police don’t want venues to open because they *checks notes* will have to police the area
The year is 2037 and there is now only a single yoga studio left in London after the MET have objected to a blanket ban on any venues operating in central London after 4pm to curb criminal gangs preying on arts enthusiasts who wear fur mink coats and diamond rings before they hop into their -easy-to-steal rolls royces.
I mean, who wouldn’t worry about an influx of sax offenders?
The place is only trying to stay open until 1am… 1 fucking am. And to think that there are people (including the mayor) who deny that licensing is the issue…
In other European cities it’s routine for normal little bars to stay open until 2am in the central areas and it’s absolutely fine, in fact having more people out on the street at that time makes it much safer.
But of course it’s easier for the Met to limit the legal activities of regular citizens than to actually stop criminals committing crimes, so Londoners can’t have what people in other cities get as standard.
