> Between lectures, Ziegler befriended Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, and over the course of smoke-filled, wine-drenched evenings in Sartre’s mother’s flat
I wonder if he minded the fact that his two buddies raped young girls on a regular basis and openly defended pedophilia…
Fantastic read, thank you.
It’s strange that the article doesn’t even try to explain the contradiction that someone who sees civil rights threatened by corporations used to be so friendly towards people with significant track records of human rights abuses.
I used to like the Guardian, but it’s become pretty biased.
I haven’t heard anything about Ziegler in years, and the whole story is about what he did and books he wrote decades ago.
And it seems the author isn’t even aware of the dichotomy of writing the entire article against capitalism in Switzerland, but interviewing Ziegler in his villa with a lake view. Telling about his private school experience. Talking about how Ziegler met Guevara at the InterContinental Hotel. Or even how Ziegler smuggled cash across the border (money laundering), when they accuse “the capitalists” of exactly that a few paragraphs up. Or lending his passport to a “comrade” to cross the same border (identity fraud).
> His enemies accuse him of treason
This kind of loaded term so casually thrown around is a sure tell way that there is a big chunk of corruption being uncovered and the folks responsible for it are very much alive and afraid of it getting exposed.
Ziegler, the friend of Arafat and Castro. Cannot stand this guy. A hard core communist!
This is as if the Daily Wire celebrates Netanjahu.
Regardless of the person itself, we should stop protecting the concept of “Switzerland” whenever shady bad things are being exposed like we as individuals are being attacked; best thing we can do for this country is get rid of corrupt lobbies companies and politicians who will only defend their own economical interest and hide behind “Switzerland”
It’s like people defending cartels or mafias like they are heroes just because they are against the ones exposing them or because they represent their region
There isn’t one correct view of history. Besides, anyone criticizing another country is usually being hypocritical.
Survival is everything.
