I think the Australian politicians underestimated Macron in this. I also think they have a credibility issue .

Australia and UK played very poorly and lost a lot of credibility, they clearly appear as unreliable and untrustworthy partners (for different reasons). And France loses as well with an ignorant and naive answer though to be fair they couldn’t have prevented this.
