  1. This is the kind of thing that has led to Trump in power in the US threatening to slap tarrifs wherever they can. Not saying it’s a good thing but we need to do more to protect our economy. These 70 workers will now be on our benefits bill, or they will find new jobs at the expense of 70 other unemployed people. Either way higher cost to the taxpayers.

  2. I’ve heard Solovair is a higher quality alternative though I personally get my boots from military surplus.

  3. Dr Martens used to be good, last for years.
It’s crap now, even the heritage line.

  4. What a shame, they used to be so good. In the last 10 years or so the quality has gone down hill, I can’t imagine it will improve now.

  5. That’s business for you, it’s all about profit margins

  6. I’d rather pay £400 for an old pair with a lifetime warranty actually worth something than whenever this pathetic nonsense is.

  7. Weird that I’ve only started getting them as one of my ads on Reddit just this past week or so.  Doc Martins, tights and would I like to join the army or RAF cyber services although I’m too old and I feel they should know that 😅

  8. With such a low minimum wage, low taxes, cheap rents and cheap energy I really don’t understand why manufacturing isn’t thriving in the UK

  9. Quality will plummet, price will increase, company makes more money, consumers lose

  10. Shameful. Obviously the company is already doomed to consider this option but it’s still wrong.

  11. They offer Boots made of artificial Leather for 200 Bucks. No wonder they are struggling.

  12. There’s got to be laws soon to disincentize offshoring. There’s no benefit to British people or government

  13. I’m starting to see more offshore roles in tech. The weird thing is, this time round the candidates are actually good. I fear jobs will stay overseas from now on

  14. Went to shit the moment they moved manufacturing from the UK to Asia anyway.

  15. Which begs the question: How much is the CEO being paid and is he taking a hit on his salary?

  16. Increase Employers NI.. What a fabulous idea that was..

  17. Outsourcing to India should be illegal or made very very expensive. How do we start one of those petitions to get parliament to debate it ?

  18. Why did I think they were German?
Any way they got das boot.

Edit – turns out he was German, I don’t need to know now

  19. To be fair, they off-shored production some time ago. It just manages the product portfolio now, just like Berghaus and the like 😞

  20. They’ve been shit for at least 20 years. They tore my ankles to ribbons for MONTHS last time I tried to wear a pair in. It shouldn’t take that long and they shouldn’t be so painful. Even my work-mandated heavy construction boots are miles better.

  21. Ah, we are back to offshoring IT to “save money” – until it doesn’t of course, and you have to pay far more to bring it back onshore.

  22. I bought some of the Doc Marten ForLifes about a decade ago, so I get a free pair whenever they wear out.

They are wearing out a touch quicker each time. If I didn’t get such a great deal, I would never buy another pair of docs.

  23. People on here are assuming it’s for boot making but It says it’s for mostly IT roles.

This is happening to pretty much every UK company I deal with. I’m pretty much the only UK based person in most meetings I attend and that’s only because I’m in a niche market.

I feel very sorry for younger people because companies aren’t training new recruits and are simply hoovering up cheap labour from abroad.

Foreign workers should really be taxed but companies will then just relocate entirely. There needs to be a shift in company mindset. I.e. what the point of a company is for.

  24. Went into the Dr. Martins shop before Christmas there were like five people working there doing sweet FA. It was weird cause it was such a small shop, it was a bit of a culture shock cause it seems you would be lucky in most shops to get more than two people working at once!

  25. I can vouch for Jim Greens if you are looking for quality boots.

  26. Bought DMs once. They fell apart after less than 2 years of use. Will never buy them again, and this was a few years ago now.

Pisses me off how they sell the ‘originals’ on their website which are the same as the shitty default/Chinese ones but made in England like they all used to be.

  27. What a shame. I think dr martens and Loake might have been a couple of the last British shoe making factories.

  28. This is happening all over. Lots of lay offs in my company just to replace them with indian contractors.

  29. Damn I was just going to buy a pair!!! Fuck them, honestly wont be buying from them now

  30. It’s been a long, long time since Dr Martens were decent.

  31. I’m sure doc martens has already figured this out. But if they move their factory to India, then can’t find anyone willing to work with leather (dead cow), I’m going to piss myself laughing!

  32. What’s new. Been made redundant twice in my lifetime, worked in mechanical engineering. Governments really need to get behind British manufacturing and start investing.
