‘Winter holiday’ ends with snow and sub-zero weather

The end of the school winter holiday week is set to bring some of the coldest temperatures so far this year.

Up to five centimetres of snow could fall on Saturday according to forecasts, while Sunday could see some winter sun.

“We are waking up to quite a bit of cloud cover on Friday. Only in the northeastern part of Zealand does the day begin with sunshine,” meteorologist Trine Pedersen from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) told news wire Ritzau.

Clouds will remain over the southwestern part of the country as the day progresses, while the sun may break through in the northern and eastern regions.

“In terms of precipitation, it will mostly stay dry, but there may be a light dusting of snow in the southwestern part of the country” on Friday, Pedersen said.

Temperatures today will range from freezing to minus two degrees Celsius.

Danish newspaper editorials compare Trump’s Ukraine peace proposal to Neville Chamberlain

It’s rare for multiple Danish newspapers to weigh in on the same issue in their editorial sections on the same day, but US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan for Ukraine appears to be an exception, with eight publications all commenting on it.

The newspapers say peace cannot be negotiated without Ukraine’s involvement and that it would be wrong to pressure the war-torn country into giving up territory and forfeiting its potential Nato membership. Trump’s defence secretary Pete Hegseth this week stated all of these things were required for a peace deal with Russia.

Both Politiken and Berlingske compare the situation to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s infamous 1938 agreement with Adolf Hitler in Munich, an attempt at peace that was later widely condemned as Germany went on to start World War II.

“At the time, the Czechoslovaks were humiliatingly left waiting outside the negotiation room to hear their fate – much like what seems to be happening with Ukraine as Trump drafts his peace deal. Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler turned out to be a disaster,” Politiken writes.

Interest in house purchases at a high level

A total of 5,617 mortgage loan offers were issued for home purchases in January, the highest number in a single month since June 2022 according to a report from banking organisation Finans Danmark.

Declining interest rates are a factor in the increased buyer demand, Peter Jayaswal, Finans Danmark’s Director of Mortgage and Real Estate Financing said.

“At the same time, inflation has been stable and employment has been rising. This has likely encouraged more Danes to explore their options for finding a new home,” Jayaswal told Ritzau.

The number of mortgage loan offers for home purchases has doubled compared to the same month last year, while the price per square metre for Copenhagen apartments was earlier reported to have hit a new high.

Denmark pledges over 10 million kroner in aid to UNRWA

The Danish government said Thursday it was pledging an additional 10.2 million kroner ($1.4 million) to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, which Israel has banned from operating within its borders.

Denmark “will provide a new contribution of 10.2 million kroner to strengthen UNRWA’s neutrality and internal reform process,” the government said in a statement.
