Im planning on traveling to norway this september!! Does this itinary sounds feasable? And, we wanted to see the aurora borealis in Tromso, but some people told us we needed to stay there longer. Opinions?

  1. Low probability of seeing Aurora Borealis in September, but not impossible.

Seems that you are relying on some one-way car rentals. (I suppose you plan to fly Ålesund-Tromsø) The surcharges for not returning a car the same place you rented it, are often very high in Norway.

  2. Seems like a bit of a crowded schedule but as someone else mentioned it isn’t common to see much of the Aurora Borealis that early in the year

  3. Think it is doable, if your goal is to see as muchs at possible. I personaly would be excausted after a vacation like that, but that’s just me 🙂

  4. Since I live in Stavanger, I’ll comment on that bit. 2-3 days let’s you see most of what’s interesting here, just a few tips.

The hike to Pulpit rock isn’t difficult, but don’t mistake it for a paved road either. Bring good shoes and don’t be one of “those” tourists who try to go on high heels or in flip flops. Be aware that September can both be nice and sunny, or a rainy nightmare, so even if you leave home in shorts, bring a sweater and a jacket just in case.

For your beach day, I’d also recommend taking an hour at Jernaldergården. It’s a reconstructed farm from just before the Viking age, which can also be combined with a trip to the Archeological museum if you’re so inclined. You used to get access to both with one ticket so I assume you still do, but they’re not physically close to one another.

Finally, if you like beer, go to På Kornet or Cardinal. The former is a gastro pub so you can eat some great Korean Chicken Wings there 🙂

  5. As someone living in the Arctic cirkle (but in Sweden) it very possible to see northern lights in the end of september. But I do recommend going away from the City Lights for it.

As far as tragelling goes. It’s not impossible, but always add a few extra hours for driving around. It goes a lot slower than you might think. I assume you fly between Alesund and Trømso?

  6. Will your flight back home be from Oslo or Tromsø?

If you’re flying back from Tromsø, i’d rent a car for the whole stretch from Oslo to Ålesund. Even if there’s a surcharge, you’d be better off with all the flexibility. Public transport outside the cities (Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, and to a lesser extent Ålesund) can be less frequent, just getting from Stavanger to the beaches at Jæren can be tricky by bus, and there’s quite a walk from the train stations. With a car you can choose both timing and destinations more freely.

If you’re flying back home from Oslo, i’d even consider driving the whole stretch to Tromsø and back. You’d get to see a lot more of the country, but that’s a long drive…

Aurora borealis in september is unlikely, but not impossible.

  7. Kinda partial, but it looks like you’ve written Aalesund there, without actually doing anything in Aalesund?
Would recommend the aquarium there, as well as a walk in the centre, just look at our lovely Jugendstil buildings.

Send a DM if you want more info!

  8. Any particular reason to visit Mandal in september? If not, it’s a lot more to do in Kristiansand, which isn’t far away. Mandal is not a big place at all, and is often better experienced if you have a boat. And Lindesnes is kinda, meh. You have a super tight schedule, I got tired just by reading it, but i guess it’s possible.
