_Rising prices and tax hikes mean living standards will not recover to their pre-pandemic level until 2024-25_
That sounds incredibly optimistic. Not that pre-pandemic ‘living standards’ were particularly great.
“In October prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine it expected the UK economy to grow 6% this year. Now it expects growth of just 3.8% this year.”
The invasion into Ukraine by Russia is wrong, but perhaps the sanctions were a bit too hasty, eh chaps?
“More lockdown, more furlough, continue free testing, give give give”
“I can’t afford to live, everything’s too expensive”
Same people. You deserve this.
Having got Brexit dun, you have to give credit where credit is due. Boris and his cohorts have succeeded in levelling ~~up~~ everyone.
You wanted to live in a a Britain from a bygone age, they are delivering.
Don those Rose tinted glasses, enjoy your lbs and oz’s and a few weeks from now you can all marvel at those bendy banana’s that you can’t afford.
But hey at least we’re not being drowned in red tape or obeying laws we don’t want….. Right?
Keep voting Tory middle classes. Would be far worse that chaos with Ed stuff…
Being a forecaster for UK living standards must be so easy. Just aim the slope down over time
To be fair, we have just come out of a global pandemic and into European war. I’m no fan of the tories, but they did have interest rates at basically zero for a decade and pay for a lot of people to stay home and not work for about a year. They could do a bit more, but it’s not their fault and they have not done nothing.
But just imagine how bad it would be under Corbyn with people well into 6 figure salaries being taxed another 5% and actual help for people struggling along on low incomes/minimum wage.
Can’t have any of that nonsense in the true blue (and purple) dream that is Brexitland. /s
You need to get out off your bubble no difference thought the world , !!!!
This has been a pot boiling away for the last decade.
Yes, cost of living will affect people worldwide, but a post-Brexit Britain will be uniquely sensitive to its effects.
Food bank usage has steadily risen for ages, and now that the costs are affecting more people, it’s suddenly only now a cost of living crisis?
The crisis has been going on for years under the guise of austerity. It has disproportionally affected lower income families and will now affect people who sat semi-comfortably just above that poverty line.
There is nothing new about this.
I remember being a kid and assuming that the world was on a linear path to progressing and life was destined to get better every year. This has clearly been proven wrong, and it makes me wonder when we actually peaked
The wealth is still there. It’s just being extracted from the people.
We are being ruled by the rich and the friends of the corporations and the pandemic was their perfect gift to shake us down and make their record profits.
Sunak gave billions of our money to the corporations and is now arrogantly throwing down scraps to try and keep us alive.
Nice were heading towards 1950’s Britain again… All we need now is for the faakin blacks and brownies to fuckorff back to where they came from. Then Britain will be alright because it’ll be all white.
-Home Secretary, Pretti Patel.
I’m sure rishis NI threshold change is gonna get people through this right guys?…. right?
I swear every week I see this headline and we’re further back in time. Bring on the Victorian era in April and we might be able to make it back to medieval serfdom in time for Christmas!
Crazy how long ago December seems.
There was this desert place that popped up on Deliveroo near me around that time, thought I’d try it after Christmas.
Come January – “£35 for a ‘dunking box’ are you outside your tiny little mind.”
Now I’ve basically got three discretionary purchases down for the entire year.
Retro Tories. Want to create the halcyon days of the 50s, but takes us back to the 80s instead. 15% mortgages anyone?
5 millions on the dole? Mrs Thatcher’s monetarist dream just keeps on giving doesn’t it? It’s over Sunak, it doesn’t work, it doesn’t trickle down. In a world of pandemic and climate change a hard brexit austerity Tory government is the last thing we need.
In a country with an electorate not so keen to trample over all beneath them, the Conservative Party would have been run out of office long ago and never have a chance of regaining power. But so long as people can still keep being played/manipulated through a poisonous media dripfeed of “but benefit scroungers”, “but immigrants”, “but the EU”, then we, as a country, will continue to deserved the constant lowering of living standards.
The only way this will ever change is if middle classes are actually affected.
Somewhere there is an alternate reality where Ed miliband didn’t eat that bacon sani….wonder what economic state they’re in
At least we can start measuring our miserable lives in Imperial to match the 1950s soon
My family always voted Labour until under Corbyn they didn’t . Labour are not offering a valid alternative so there’s no point in criticising people left with two poor choices
What do you expect when you pay practically the whole of the nations workforce to sit on their arses doing nothing for over a year.
You gotta love the Tories. Get in. Fuck shit up. Get out. People are too racist to live without you. Get in again. Fuck shit up again – to epic proportions. Don’t have to get out as there’s a nuclear war now. But you lived your best life.
I bet Boris & co are really happy about that, they are making the not so well off desperate, hoping they will work longer hours, or get a second job, to make ends meet, and also help the rich get richer. Boris & Co are really nasty people. This over bit of bollocks they came out with, about reducing tax, in a few years, just mean a pay rise won’t be much, but all it’s doing, is helping the rich again. People want a decent pay rise, not a reduction in tax. That’s just conning the workers. Every thing that they have done, since in power, and especially since Boris, is just to benefit the rich. They haven’t helped the workers one bit, only Rob them of a decent life. Horrible people, that’s all they are.
