Quick question about my flight tomorrow.
How strict are they about these dimensions, as long as i stay under 8kg and the bag fits under the seat. Is a normal backback ok?
A backpack is usually way smaller than that. Look at those size measurements. Usually a backpack or a purse is allowed anyways as it fits under the seat, the carry on is usually a small suit case that goes in the overhead compartment.
A small backpack that fits under the seat comfortably is OK in my experience.
Yes, a backpack will definitely work. If you’re worried about the 15cm “thickness”, you can always put some stuff in your pockets/jacket 😉
I fly Finnair alot for and never had any issues with bag size or weight.
How strict seems to depend on the airport on my experience. Oulu: they didn’t care never measured never weighed. JFK: they will weigh the used tissue you are throwing out right after check in. Hel: also very relaxed. They looked at the bag and saw it was about the right size and were fine with it.
Finnair actually used the Fjällräven Kånken in their info ad as an example!
Size is not a problem as it’s a backbag. Weight is sometimes controlled depending how much extra time and staff they have in HEL. Some airports enforce this rule more strictly as Finnair asks them to do so but usually in HEL they don’t have much time. However it’s unlikely your bag will weight more than 8kgs anyways. If you want to be extra sure arrive to your gate right when the boarding starts. Sometimes if there is a lot of passengers already before the boarding starts they start to measure everyone’s bags. Also if it’s an ATR flight they are way more strict about the rules than on other AC types.

A while ago, we got called to the front randonly before the boarding process. Turned out they wanted to see what we had as handluggage. The guy started to say that our backpack was too big and he would allow it this time, but normally it would cost us extra. I told him the bag has fitted under the chair for at least a dozen flights already, but he kept insisting that his eye estimation was correct.
Finnair is acting more like Ryanair these days. How can you not even provide basic coffee when you are based in a country that drinks the most.
