1975: A centuries-old tradition continued as Prince Charles became High Steward of the new Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (main picture).
A member of the Royal Family had been the High Steward of Windsor ever since the office was first held by Prince Rupert in 1668.
Prince Charles accepted the position at a formal ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor.
1985: It was announced that Maidenhead’s only cinema, the ABC, was set to close in the spring.
The site was being sold ‘unconditional of planning consents’ – after the redevelopment of the land was rejected at a planning appeal the previous year.
The 802-seat theatre was built in the 1930s as The Rialto, but owner EMI argued it was only
attracting 10 per cent of its capacity.
1990: Despite the bitter winds and driving rain, hundreds of Royal Borough residents turned out to demonstrate their overwhelming opposition to the poll tax.

Supporters of all ages and political persuasions huddled together under umbrellas as speakers delivered their addresses at the Maidenhead Against the Poll Tax meeting in Kidwells Park.
1995: The annual Festival of Music took place at Altwood School, with choirs, bands and orchestras from schools throughout Maidenhead gathering to perform.

Around 200 musicians from six schools performed a wide range of music ranging from Herbie
Hancock to Handel in front of the Mayor and Mayoress, headteachers and parents.
1995: Aircraft were in full flight above the Aviation in Maidenhead exhibition, which opened at Maidenhead Library.

Staged by the town’s Heritage Centre, the displays chronicled the story of early pioneers of flight – who flew strapped to kites above Pinkneys Green – and the history of White Waltham Airfield and the Air Transport Auxiliary.
2000: The opening of part of a new road layout around Grenfell Island signalled another stage in the site’s development.

For the first time, motorists drove along one side of the dual carriageway around the £70million development.
2000: Pupils at Furze Platt Senior School put on their dancing shoes for a multi-national mix of traditions in their show, Dance 2000.

More than 100 performers took part in the colourful millennium dance spectacular, which included 36 different items on the programme.
