Which road would be the safest to travel by bicycle during April? Safety regarding trafic and winter road maintenance. Route 3 seems really busy though free of snow/ice.

  1. No idea about the road status, but Røros is a wonderul place you should consider visiting if you’re going by anyway.
Hope you have snow tires, you’re gonna need them!

  2. Star far away from Rv3. It’s one of the most dangerous roads in Norway. And its not free of snow at the edges, its slush and people drive like speed limits are a suggestion not a rule. If you’re planning on biking you need to stay off that one. There’s a smaller road that goes on the right side of Glomma (the large river) the entire way from Elverum, it’s really beautiful and lots of nature. Take that one to Tynset and from there to Røros.

  4. my experience so far as both a driver and cyclist is that Norway is NOT at all bike-friendly. Due to the spread of towns, I can’t imagine there being a lot of roads apart from highways between them, and those don’t have a bike lane usually…

I once asked a Norwegian why there are so many roundabouts instead of intersections, and he replied:
“Roundabouts have better traffic flow. It’s super dangerous for cyclists though, but I guess you cant have everything”

Also another thing I am personally very frustrated with: pedestrians have 0.0 spacial awareness

  5. Disregarding safety comments (which I know little about) I’d chose the thickest one that I suspect has the least height meters. Røros could get seriously cold in April if you’re unlucky with wind directions. Nothern wind is of course guaranteed to be cold.

The lowest route should thus have the least snow too…

  6. I would not feel safe biking rv3 between Støren and Ålen. It’s a narrow road with many big trucks in a valley that is prone to rock slides on certain parts

  7. I visited Norway end of March a few years back and avoided going this route due to avalanche warnings and a lot of snow. Did and east to west drive instead. April just seems way early to do a bike trip in Norway. But i dont live there, so, good luck?

  8. I’m actually living near Ålen. I’d recommend staying away from the Rv3. Very busy and people drive like idiots. Same goes for the road from Ålen to Støren. Steer clear from that one. The road is narrow and has a lot of places with bad visibility due to sharp turns. People, in general, again, drive too fast there.

I’d say take the road from Røros to Stugudalen if the road is open. I think it will be. If you have a mountainbike, the road that goes from Killingdal (near Ålen) towards Stugudalen, following the river Gaula, which is a gravel road, is also very, very pretty! Especially if you like camping, I think you’d enjoy it near Storøvlingen. Gorgeous place and great view! (Though thinking about it, I don’t think the mountain pass is open in April?)

If you get stuck in the area, just let me know and maybe I can help you out somehow. Be safe out there!

  9. may i sugest another route? [go from Røros to Selbu then trondheim](https://www.google.no/maps/dir/60.9348857,11.4931717/62.5837358,11.3668919/63.0460078,11.6737664/63.248511,10.9510773/63.4326178,10.4024764/@62.7416981,11.1338613,9.96z/data=!4m2!4m1!3e0?hl=en)
if i remember correctly the route Røros Tydal Selbu might have less traffic. but the trade off is that the road is a bit worse and that its a bit more dangerus on the weather side. the Stjørdal Selbu crossing snows up relativly often. but it might be worth a try.

Keep in mind at some point during the 2 Røros routes cell service might be spotty. i recomend you download the [113 app](https://norskluftambulanse.no/hjelp113/) it has a location tracking feature if you feel like you need imidiate support.

but i dont cycle so take my recomendation for route with a grain of salt.

  10. Røros 🙂 i lived just beneath røros for 20 years, and the route from røros to elverum (and even further south) is beautiful. For the safest (and most scenic) route, try to stay on the right side of the river (north being up of course) from tynset and down to elverum 🙂

  11. Røros is beautiful!! I think your suggested route is the most beautiful one – buut.. fv26 and fv28 are a narrow roads(no center-line kind of narrow) which will have heavy traffic up to Trysil in mid April, as Easter holidays are from 8-18th. Some traffic after Trysil too, but alot less.

And they don’t salt fv26 and fv28(after Trysil at least) so the road will likely be covered with ice, with deep tire tracks.

If you’re travelling between the 8th and 18th, the smaller road from Rena to Tynset via Åkrestrømmen could be a better option. Its even more narrow and probably just as icy, but not as much high-speed traffic 🙂

  12. I live in one of theese places you’d be going through, the shortest might not be the safest but its and with a nice view at certain places

  13. I would definitely go by Drevsjø and up to Røros.

I live close to Røros and the roads are pretty much snow free now.

Between Drevsjø and Røros there is plenty of nice spots where you can use a camp fire etc.
