I loved his new initiative, the “Road to prison” programme.
With his speech at the Tisza Party congress on Saturday, Péter Magyar continues on the path he has begun: he is trying to convey to as many people as possible that his political proposal is everything that could ever be considered good or positive in Fidesz, but at the same time he rejects everything that is bad in Fidesz. This is understandable, in the past – not actually 15, but – 27 years, Viktor Orbán and Fidesz have built such a strong system narrative that its explicit denial seems almost impossible.
Péter Magyar and the Tisza are not trying to do this, but rather to reinterpret it, or if you like: to divert it.
In the first third of his speech, the leader of the Tisza Party painted a grand picture: in the middle of Europe, all Hungarians are together, fighting together, enduring together, they are bound together by an invisible thread of patriotism. He tried to make himself seen as one in this multitude, which is why he said that Viktor Orbán had a stronger challenger than him, the entire Hungarian people, and he was trying to stand up where he was needed. He tried to expand the community of Hungarians not only among those living today, but also into the past. In addition to József Antall, he quoted Ferenc Deák and repeatedly referred to the greatest Hungarian historical figures, suggesting that he and the Tisza Party would carry on this legacy.
But he also spoke about how “the bond of patriotism that binds everything and everyone together can only be broken by committing the most serious crimes,” and indeed, “unfortunately, some have strayed from the 1,100-year-old path.” According to Magyar, our great ancestors would be turning in their graves if they saw what Viktor Orbán and Fidesz have made of Hungary. So the situation is given: here he stands, with all the great Hungarians who are alive today and have ever lived, and they are facing those who steal and oppress the Hungarian people, they are the cause of all the problems.
Meanwhile, Péter Magyar uses the word Hungarian for something similar to what Orbán used to use the word nation and homeland 20 years ago, only while Orbán stated bluntly after his 2002 election defeat that “the homeland cannot be in opposition” (and caused a huge outcry), Magyar is trying to appropriate the word Hungarian in a much more subtle way. Of course, he doesn’t have such a difficult time doing this because it’s also his last name. But essentially, this is what it’s about: he’s trying to push Viktor Orbán and Fidesz out of the Hungarian population, or as he said: “Viktor Orbán and his 3,000 henchmen,” who maintain this system.
This is also in line with the slogan recently spreading among the politicians and volunteers of the Tisza Party: “There is no right, there is no left, only Hungarians”. This comes from the same source as Péter Márki-Zay’s slogan (not right, not left, only upwards), but it is a much more fortunate choice. Because of Márki-Zay’s strong religiosity, some religiosity has always been attached to the motto “only upwards”, which naturally divides Hungarians much more than their Hungarianness.
In his speech on Saturday, Magyar repeatedly said that Tisza is not just an organization, but also “an umbrella” under which every Hungarian can stand, and that the party extends its hand to everyone, even to Fidesz members. “Dear Fidesz compatriots! We stand here, Hungarians with good feelings, we want what you want, we fear what you fear (…) Dear Fidesz compatriots, our friends! Our country is more important than the enrichment of a few. This is not a party political issue, this is the common cause of all Hungarians, we extend our hand to you too (…) think about where our common country has come to, whether you voted for this. Let us extend our hand, look each other in the eye, and say together: There is no right, there is no left, only Hungarians.”
According to Saturday’s speech, the main crime of Viktor Orbán and Fidesz is not “luxury living,” theft or corruption, but rather that they want to turn Hungarians against Hungarians, to provoke Hungarians, and this is what they would do to help themselves enrich themselves and stay in power.
In order to separate himself from Hungarians, he referred to the system’s maintainers as “clan” and “horde” in addition to “henchmen,” and throughout his speech he tried to compare Fidesz to a force that is plundering, plundering, and oppressing Hungary, who are stealing and betraying their homeland.
He contrasted this with the Tisza Party’s achievements to date. He said that since the party’s existence, life in Hungary has become better, as, for example, several hospital developments have been launched after they drew attention to hospital conditions, brought gifts to residents of orphanages, and tried to contribute to flood protection with their volunteers.
But while the Tisza Party and its volunteers appeared to be a mobile, fast, ready-to-action force in the speech, Orbán and Fidesz were the aging set. He compared the government leaders’ gray minibuses to the black cars of the communist era, Zsolt Bayer to Antal Apró, and Orbán to the aging János Kádár, and he also said that Viktor Orbán, “the street fighter, is also afraid because he knows it’s over.”
“A new show needs a new man,” he summarized several times, certainly referring to himself under “new man.” And indeed: a new man, a new show, but the TV will remain. After all, it is the Hungarian system, if not the current one, but the Fidesz system of 20 years ago. There are, of course, big differences on important points, but the whole thing is well symbolized by the flags behind Péter Magyar – the same as the ones that usually stand behind Viktor Orbán, but on the two edges there are two EU flags. Big difference, on important points, but the whole thing is still a bit similar.
He also spoke about possible accountability, but did not mention accountability. He said that the Tisza government would let the justice system work, but then he said that they would expand prison capacity “so that Hatvanpuszta also understands, we will launch the road to prison program”. Among the Tisza government’s program points, he also listed the establishment of a so-called Stability Fund, which would include assets “taken back from the National Complicity System”.
Btw, Magyar is also planning something “big” to force Orbán into calling early elections. Most likely a mass strike
I Like him much
Finally some good news.
How much russian d does he inhale? All 10cm of Putin (like Orban) or sligthly less?
I hope Mr Magyar will build new Magyarország 🙂
Good! Hurry up! Push him all the way back to Moscow
is he an actual opposition or just a rebranding of the ruling club?
Sounds both promising and hopeful.
Can’t think of a better name to counter a corrupt PoS like Orbán. If Hungary’s liberation from Orbán is done by a person named Magyar, it’s truly poetic (bear in mind that my knowledge of Hungarian politics is pretty limited, so take my words with a grain of salt and listen to hungarians!)
Holy fuck that’s some news I could get happy with. The bad eggs in EU removed in the lead-up to this MAGA rise. I’m constantly afraid that they’re just gonna get more right wing weirdos elected through their machinations.
Peter magyar’s big package occupies so much space that there is little left for the omega male Orban
