Brave men and women of this country have fought and died throughout our history in defense of this right. We have guardrail mechanisms in place via the Bill of Rights to ensure that this expression isn’t hateful or malicious in nature. The reality is that Canadians feel legitimately threatened for their safety and wellbeing by the United States government’s current overt hostility. The star spangled banner, a song that has been sung out loud in arenas by Canadian fans throughout the years, is a representation of many aspects of the United States, including its government. The fans aren’t booing the players, they’re using their favourite platform, the church of hockey, to express their disappointment with the hostility coming from the current US administration.

    Canadians are kind people. We are excellent neighbours. Given the bloody, ruthless, and uncompromising ways that Canadians have taken in defense of its country in the past, I think Americans should shut up and deal with a little booing.
