Moldovan Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, announced that the 60-day state of emergency in the energy sector will not be extended beyond Feb. 14, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.
The state of emergency was declared on Dec. 13 to ensure gas and electricity supplies to the unrecognized, Moscow-backed separatist enclave of Transnistria after Gazprom’s transit agreement with Naftogaz expired on Jan. 1.
“At this stage, the necessary conditions have been created for Transnistria to be supplied with natural gas without the need to extend the state of emergency,” Recean said.
To cover the increase in heating tariffs, 1.2 billion lei ($65 million) from several partner countries will be allocated to a compensation fund that will provide financial assistance to citizens during the heating season.
“Citizens included in the compensation program will receive monthly financial assistance in the amount of 500 to 1400 lei ($25 to $75) during the heating season, including March.”
In addition, €30 million ($31.5 million) of emergency aid from the EU will be transferred to Energocom, which has purchased gas and electricity for both Transnistria.
The state of emergency in Transnistria has been extended twice and will remain in effect until March 10.
