ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) — A Pennsylvania electric utility says some of its customer data was part of a data breach.

PPL Electric Utilities said a third-party vendor was impacted by a widespread breach of file transfer software they had used. The breach occurred in June 2023 and was resolved later that year.

In the Midstate, the Allentown-based utility serves much of Lancaster County, the Greater Harrisburg area, and the Route 22 corridor north to Mifflintown. PPL services 29 counties in the state.

“Importantly, data exposed did not include banking or credit card information, social security numbers or account passwords, as no such information is shared with this vendor,” PPL said in a statement. “It did not extend beyond basic information such as name, address, phone number, email address and utility account number.”

“This issue is completely unrelated to PPL’s systems and critical infrastructure across all our service areas,” PPL continued.
