This photo always makes me think of a story that my Irish nana told me about a trip to her local dentist. Must have been about 1910 or so and she got a filling or extraction without anaesthetic and the dentist gave her a banana for not crying. He also didn’t have electricity in his surgery, so his drill was rigged up from a Singer sewing machine treadle.
She took it home not knowing what the hell it was, and her dad told her to put it in the airing cupboard. Once it was ripe, she cut it into thin slices and handed it out around her neighbours.
A few years later she was nearly shot and killed during the Home Rule troubles.
So she lived to tell me a “cool story bro” about something that most of us take for granted.
