  18. All these headlines use the bizarre, smooth phrases like Canada “becoming” the 51st state, and that obscures the fact that what that would entail would be a violent, bloody, protracted, costly **invasion** and **war**.

  19. It’s interesting that he is looking at Canada as just one state, instead of multiple states represented by the current provinces and territories. That’s because unlike the House of Representatives which is capped at 435 members, the Senate would grow in number, as all states get 2 senators.

    The reality is that whether Canada were one state or many, the reapportionment of House members would come from Blue states. But in the Senate he could afford 2 likely Blue senators, but certainly not 22-28 of them.

    And yet there are two perfectly good options for states, with Americans wanting statehood: DC and Puerto Rico. But Congress is looking to revoke self rule (I.e. the mayor, council, and courts) for DC, and we’re all quite aware of how Trump views PR.

    All they want to do is exploit Canada, for its mineral rights, for control of the Northwest Passage (to bypass issues with both the Panama and Suez Canals, but Canada currently restricts heavy fuel oil ships in its waters), and a place to naturally place and cool the data centers needed to expand AI and cloud without fighting American communities for very expensive land rights.

Canada should suspend all diplomatic and economic ties with the US, call reservists, mobilize to the US border, then demand a meeting on neutral ground (presumably UK) where representatives of the US can explain why they are insinuating the conquest of another sovereign power.

    This should be one of the biggest clusterfucks we’ve ever seen, yet US appeasement is so natural for others that they refuse to safeguard their sovereignty by acting appropriately.

    Hell, if Europe and Canada weren’t so inept, they’d **all** suspend trade and regular diplomacy with the US until a summit on neutral ground resolves the US conquest threat.

    Sure, it will hurt their economies… but the debacle would hurt the US **a lot** more ultimately, which is the point. Actual consequences for misdeeds. Let’s see all the things we import from Canada evaporate because we keep talking about taking the Sudentenland for lebensreum.

    It’s objectively ridiculous that the only result here is more rhetoric. This all just proves Putin right: the West has no resolve, they will not collectively defend themselves, we can conquer them slowly and coyly because of this. They’re more obsessed with the trappings of wealth than they are with self-defense, self-determination, or a just peace.

  24. In a few months Musk and his disinformation war machine is gonna try to divide the Canadian population into joiners and those who want to remain a sovereign country. Meta and Google will soon follow suit.

    This process will take up to a year. Those who join, will become more radical, even though they are a minority of around 15-20%. In 2026 the Canadian Prime Minister will do a referendum that is not binding, similar to the Brexit vote. Musk is gonna interfere in the voting process, it will be the test for the upcoming midterms, that they have to win convincingly to remain in absolute power. The vote will be narrowly in favor of joining the US, the Canadian government will dismiss the result and Trump sees it in his power to “liberate the Canadian population from the oppressive regime”. Then the special military operation starts to topple the Canadian Government.

    They will overwhelmingly win the midterms, because Musk is overseeing the election. Democrats will write angry letters, and the free press left, will write headlines similar too: “This might be the red line that Trump crossed, that gets him impeached for the 4th time.” “Why democrats are to blame on bombs on Toronto”. “Bernie Sanders blasts Trump online”. After the midterms, the Constitution is gonna be rewritten to allow Trump a third term and allow him to directly appoint a successor.

    Democracy is dead.

One thing I don’t see people talking about/worried about is the fact that Canada would massively shift elections towards dems (which I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t mean holding canada hostage). The GOP is obviously aware of this… it’s one of the reasons they don’t want to make Puerto Rico a state. I’m worried that them trying to make Canada a state is a sign that they don’t plan on having fair/free democratic elections anymore. They don’t care about much, but you bet your ass they care about maintaining power. This is bad, this is really bad.

  28. Canada ought to work with the UK and France about getting nukes – only way to deter these imperialistic fascists is with the threat of force.
    The days of non-proliferation died with Russia invading Ukraine, any democracy with volatile or predatory neighbors need to invest in a nuclear arms program ASAP and arm themselves to the teeth, make any attempt of force a case of mutually assured destruction.

    I mean that for EVERYONE, Denmark, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Poland…. if you can afford them then make them.
    The world is backsliding into a 19th Century imperal mindset and the only way to protect yourselves is through military might.
