Brexit: European Fishing’s Dependence on British Waters

  1. Dependence isn’t the right word.

The EU may have caught 760 000 tonnes of fish in UK water, but the EU produce more than 5 600 000 tonnes of fish a year.

    [Here is my source](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Fishery_statistics)

Edit: also, the UK caught 622 000t in 2019, and 90 000t of 622 000t is more or less the same proportion as 760 000t of 5 600 000t. So that post only show that the UK and the EU are equally “*dependent*” of each other.

  2. Isn’t it stupid to point out that a bunch of different countries caught more fish than a single country?
It’s like saying that a county eats more bread than a family and that’s unfair to the family.

  3. Come 2026, the UK could look into an option where , after reserving some UK quotas, have an open auction with all European nations who would like to bid for fishing quotas. Revenue generated could be used to compensate any domestic fishers, if they get affected by any EU tariffs.

  4. That’s why the UK could use fisheries access to trade for other valuable things during the negotiation process which resulted in the TCA.

But (and this is the important thing) : they *traded* it. They put it down as money on the table and they bought other things with it. It is no longer exclusively theirs, and by the TCA they are obliged to share access with others.

  5. I fully support Brits. EU has a massive overfishing problem. They are plundering the waters. With this rate there won’t be any fish left.

  6. That figure is borked. If one wants to talk about European fishing one has to include the Baltic and the Mediterranean.

  7. Misleading. The fish matures in British Waters, but they are from all over. Cutting off access to British waters means catching younger fish in International waters. This arrangement is best for all.

  8. That graph is extremely misleading in the case of Spain. Firstly because that number for spanish EEZ area is just a 35-40% of the total atlantic EEZ (probably the cantabrian sea coasts only, while Canary Islands and Gulf of Cadiz aren’t included here for some reason) and less than a quarter of the total spanish exclusive economic area, including mediterranean waters. On the other hand spanish fishing in UK waters is tiny, irrelevant, just around 9k tonnes by year, so not much more than a 1.2% of EU catches in UK waters according the graph and exactly an 1% of spanish catches by year, approx. 900,000 tonnes. Finally, a big part of spanish fishing industry doesn’t even work in Europe/Spain but in other continents (which sometimes is controversial, but makes this graph even more absurd).

Ps. BTW Most fish caught by spanish fleets is sold in Spain, Italy, France, Portugal or USA, not UK.

  9. Yes. The UK has an incredible amount of fishing area.

How come? God given? Or by international law and treaties?

And: Can EU break these in limited and specific ways? Suspend it unilateraly?

    Asking for a friend.

  10. It would be interesting to see a similar chart showing UK Entertainment industries dependence on European markets. I cannot say that I have ever seen many foreign artists performing in UK, whether at a gig or something like a festival. I have certainly seen many UK groups playing at gigs and festivals in Europe. It would be interesting to know how much income and employment is generated in UK by this activity and how it compares with same figures for fishing industry. comehttps://www.newstatesman.com/culture/music-theatre/2020/12/whats-more-important-theatre-industry-or-fishing-industry

  11. The statistics actually don’t support the statement in the headline: the surface area of the sea doesn’t say much about the amount of fish in it, and the relation of fish caught by EU countries in UK waters to that of UK fishermen caught in EU waters also doesn’t say anything about the EU‘s dependency on being able to fish in UK waters.

More interesting would be potential for fishing in EU vs UK waters, potential alternatives and which sorts of fish are in demand and where they are actually caught.

  12. Don’t europeans fish in portuguese waters? We have one of the biggest Atlantic EEZ areas
