>Following years of under-delivery on the recommended increases in public funding, and with persistent pressures on the commercial front owing to structural factors beyond RTÉ’s direct control, the funding gap continues to fuel deficits that are by definition unsustainable.
A lot of those “structural factors” are actually under RTEs control, they just want to keep the gravytrain rolling for their head “talent”.
>report warns more public money needed
Start with pay cuts.
Stop spending half a million a year on Tubridy you gobshites.
Yep, if things are that bad…you cut staff and staff wages. You dont increase what we have to pay for substandard shit.
Read the room RTE. Billions on covid, possibly billions for the Ukrainian refugees, inflation up the hoop, energy prices skyrocketing and you want to get a few more ivory back scratchers?
Get fucked you useless leeches.
Make better shows > more people watch > get more/better advertisers
Or, yknow, keep tubridy
Fuck RTÉ, build more council housing instead
Building is full of dribblers.
more public funding? How about they make more money on the ads they sell. Cheeky cunts
Lol just get rid of the big earners
I was waiting to watch the news the other evening and Fair City was on.
How, seriously HOW is this considered quality programming? I’ve seen better acting my the dredded school nativity plays.
I’d love yo know how much money gets pumped into making this utter tripe on an annual basis.
I use to enjoy the programs they made. They made great factual shows, property shows, current affair coverage. It was decent. In the last few year it has gone to shite. I’ve stopped watching it.
I don’t actually watch tv anymore, I subscribe to streaming services which does me.
Get Fukt
What is really unsustainable is that more and more young people are tuning out. What happens when the boomers all die and the Gen Zers are still watching youtube?
Fire tubs . That’s half a million a year saved .
Cap all your wages at 150k a year reduce those above and then we’ll talk. Practically telling the government to pay up or we’ll stop being your mouthpiece. Cunts.
No more funding without a forensic accounting investigation.
Just keep RTE News and one cultural channel. Fuck no I’m not paying them any more money.
Their audience is made up of pensioners. The model they have has no basis in current reality. Young people do not watch live tv. The idea of having to pay for something you do not want at threat of legal action is abhorrent. Times have changed. Time to change the business model or get out of the market. It’s just a mouthpiece for the government these days.
They should let them run ads so that they can make money themselves and become a commercially sustainable organisation. I’m all for public broadcasting and it’s nice having national stations that don’t have to cow-tow to corporate sponsors but if their situation is unsustainable even with us all paying a big license fee then, I think it’s time to let RTÉ take some ad revenue.
Oh wait..
Fire tubridy
They have become so concerned with revenue generation they are focusing too much on programmes and formats they can sell or export internationally than on creating series that actually appeal to the domestic audience.
If they invested in quality programming instead of forcing the same tired shite they might have more support.
But I genuinely haven’t watched RTE in years, and I have no reason to.
Does anyone feel that at the very least they should be uploading the news to YouTube ? They currently upload like 2 min clips it’s a joke .
Cap wages,
Cull stupidly high earners,
Cull non performing shows,
Stop doubling up on shows available on better streaming services,
Improve RTE Player (no live option on smart TV!!),
Collapse all channels into one with dedicated Irish programming daily,
Cut 2fm,
Hire someone with an ounce of PR skill to figure out how to turn your reputation around as it’s in tatters,
Stop your most senior employee whining nationally about how not enough people pay the license fee
Work on a funding model where the Irish people feel like the fee is value for money
Some of these might be a bit stupid but they really need to get their act together and get with the times.
Oh no, the poor little piggies need more slop for the trough.
strip back to single channel for news and current affairs. get rid of all the utter shite talk shows and all the clowns raking it in through sheer nepotism. They can all go fuck off and die
Your fucking operating model is unsustainable. The funding isn’t the problem!
Then just go die already .
They have a license fee AND advertising, and they’re still operating at a loss!?
Quick, put another few million into ads telling people that the TV license is part of the ‘terms and conditions’ of living in Ireland!
Fuck and I can’t emphasise this enough RIGHT OFF!

If you run a business into the ground you get fucked, this is the terms and conditions of running a business.
End lifetime contracts.
The likes of Grainne Seoige signed to a lifetime deal before going on air is ridiculous.
Whatever about Tubridy, he’s at least on the air. It’s all the others signed to state lifetime contracts that continue to get paid.
When I studied animation in college, I was told that RTE is notorious for not buying or looking into funding any Animated shows unless they’re for literal babies because the primary market that watch RTE feel that way about animation as a media.
Well, the chickens come home to roost, boomers are dying and animation students from Ireland are working on many amazing international projects that could have been braodcast on RTE, but no. We got like 6 different forign soaps on all day instead that are free to air on other stations. Incredible RTE, thanks.
People paid double industry average wages produce crap nobody wants and sit there wondering why their running out of money. Classic RTE.
Stop syndicating shite like Coronation Street or American hospital dramas. That will free up money.
RTE has to be ready to live or die on being Irish (including content as gaeilge via tg4).
Yes, that means they will be smaller and more niche but it their actual remit is to promote the Irish angle they are not a commercial entertainment station.
The internet and Satalite TV exists now to satisfy people’s hunger for mass entertainment.
I’m a big believer in the importance of public service broadcasting – and that includes nurturing homegrown talent in entertainment- but only a fraction of RTE’s budget goes to that.
Instead they try to emulate the bbc and do all the things included a bloated website – live blogging stuff like the oscars ffs – running the website like a full digital publisher, with sections for travel, fashion etc. Those are NOT within the public service sphere IMO, fun as they are. If they cut out that fat they would have a lot more money to play with for investigative reporting, original commissions (which if successful they could sell on to foreign networks – the benefit of working in English) etc.
Just start cutting presenters. Start with the most expensive and work your way down until no longer running a deficit.
No one fucking watches it anymore. If you got rid of everything other than rte news and TG4 we’d be grand.
Therein lies the problem, RTE’s spending situation is unsustainable and they still think it can be solved with public monies. That attitude is entirely unacceptable.
