Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has said Europe will not create a united European army.
He has shot down the idea of creating a united army to face off against Russia. This came after Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelenskiy had urged the EU to create a united military front, he said the continent can no longer be “sure of protection from the United States”. He went on to say that Washington would only treat Europe with respect if it had a strong military.
The discussions have been happening during 2025’s Munich Security Conference, where world leaders have convened to discuss security matters. The Ukraine war has been a main topic of conversation for many countries. The Polish foreign minister has said his country will not participate in the creation of one unified army in response to the threat Russia poses.

Sikorski said the term European army could be misconstrued, that it is a term that should be used carefully people understand it differently. A united forces of each nation’s armies in Europe would not happen.
“If you understand by it [European Army] the unification of national armies, it will not happen. But I have been an advocate for Europe, for the European Union, to develop its own defence capabilities,” he said. He also mentioned that the EU was forming a reinforced brigade and that having Polish armed forced on the ground in Ukraine was not up for consideration. He said Poland’s key role for NATO was to protect the Eastern front and ruled out his troops being deployed in Ukraine against Russia.
