“Ukraine NATO membership is not a ‘realistic’ outcome”, says US Defense Secretary • FRANCE 24

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made his first trip to NATO in Brussels on Wednesday, as allies await to learn how much military and financial support Washington intends to provide to Ukraine’s government. He stated that “the United States doesn’t believe NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome for a negotiated settlement. Instead, any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops, deployed as part of a non-NATO mission. Can Ukraine still secure the guarantees it needs to enter talks on ending the war? How will the Kremlin react? FRANCE24 International Affairs Editor Douglas Herbert explains.

  1. I despise Putin as a man willing to sacrifice his own citizens for gain, considering that Russia is such a huge landmass with massive resources that could have made a fantastic lifestyle for all Russians, not just the elite, but, he warned years ago about NATO enlargement and his own response to it, so, no surprises. Europe has courted Ukraine but dragged its sticky heels on making that happen so Europe should do more. Personally, I accept that Ukraine will not get it all back, especially Crimea, but they should at least get most of it. Donbass is a lost cause but Mariapol should be returned and a line drawn whereby Russia has no influence and no say.

  2. Europe must now support Ukraine much more strongly, make sure Ukraine is able to repel and degrade russia, its military, its economy, its oil and gas industry, so as to avoid it coming back stronge in 3-5 years. All the while, Europe should ramp up their own military production in all fields (aircraft, tanks, missiles, nuclear included), ban pro-russia parties that win elections through deception and YES put European soldiers to backend Ukrainian soldiers in battle. After all, if russia puts koreans to fight, why shouldn't EU soldiers join too?

  3. Ukraine could have become wealthy as a neutral party, milking both sides. It’s too bad their president went all-in for the US/NATO scheme and soon they’ll have nothing.

  4. The US is a unreliable, unstable self centred selfish, greedy mob under Trump. It is no friend of democracy.

  5. Dont EVER trust Trump with anything Ukraine!! Look what he did to his own VP in 2021 J6 and now he's dismantling the entire government in his own country to the detriment of all people but billionaires!!

And, if Trump is seriously upset at China, why did he put only a 10% tariff on China and 25% on everything, with his own two allied neighbours, Canada and Mexico?

Does the world understand, Trump "wants" to be like China and Putin. He thrives on dictatorships. Thats why he's dismantling all democratic checks and balances in the US government, and its only 36 or a few days more. He even ignored his own Federal Court Orders to stop! No, USA is degrading fast.

Ukraine do NOT trust Trump! He's will stab you in the back, like he did before and like he's doing to us in Canada. Get all allies together, and we PRAY and fight. Join NATO, regardless of what the USA says. The world order is degrading fast, thanks to Trump and his incompetent, grovelling followers in the Senate, and in top US agencies now!

  6. Europeans don’t have men, weapon or will to back up yet they insist a seat on the table. Talk about unrealistic… FAFO.
