I was driving from Netherlands and was confused about speed limit (missed 130 sign), so I was doing 170 in 130. I got a letter asking to pay the fine, I did around a month ago. But today, I got it back, is it normal to receive the money back? Should I pay it elsewhere? Is it a mistake and should I notify authorities?

  1. perhaps you had the wrong reference and they couldn’t link it to a fine. you should contact them and ask what the problem was.

  2. Was the original payment actually in 2020 (looks like that to me)? Then that was probably an issue with incorrectly issued fines they are trying to fix. (They would not have to do that as you did not sue, but they can. Very rare.)

  3. Did you attach a file number to your transfer or did you just transfer the money to the Bankaccount? If you in fact did not attach a file number they cant process the payment and perhabs just send it back to you. I would ask them via e mail or call what the issue was and attach your file number to the e mail other wise they cant properly respond to you.

  4. Just to add a bit. You can get a refund, if:

    * You were in court and the judge decided smth else. I know I guy that had multiple car related fines combined and replaced with Sozialstunden and MPU(aka lost driving license). He received a refund.
    * Somebody went to court and the judge ruled that the measurements taken from this unit this day(or multiple days) is inadmissible for whatever reason(not calibrated, not set up correctly, etc)

  5. Update: I called them and after providing them with my dossier number, the personnel on the call mentioned that I don’t have to pay the fine again and the case is “closed”, I tried asking why but I couldn’t get a proper explanation in English so I thanked them and hung up. (I know my bad for not speaking good German, but I was communicating in German until that point)
