Trump’s team wants the EU to remove sanctions on Russia. “Everyone needs to be OK with agreement, US Rubio says, hints at EU role needed to remove sanctions on Russia,” The Guardian reports. Rubio says today’s US-Russia meeting was “the first step of a long and difficult journey.”

  1. 2cm was all that separated two very different timelines. Sucks to live in this one.

  2. So far I hear a lot of what Ukraine must sacrifice and not anything about what Russia must give.

  3. Were the american representatives white around their mouth, after coming out from negotiations?

  4. **TL;DR:**

    • US state secretary Marco Rubio says everyone needs to be OK with agreement. He hints at EU role needed to remove sanctions on Russia.

    • No date for Trump-Putin meeting yet, but leaders expect to meet, but not set a date. US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz says Europe needs to lead on security guarantees, as he praises UK, France for ‘talking about contributing more forcefully to Ukraine’ He says Europe consulted almost daily on Ukraine, and that both sides need to talk to each other to find a way to end the conflict.

    • He says the goal is to bring an end to this conflict in a way that’s fair, enduring, sustainable and acceptable to all parties involved. “If you’re going to bring both sides together, you have to bring everyone, both sides’ we’ll continue to remind everyone,” he says.

    • The US delegation seeks to avoid giving a clear answer, saying instead they are not prepared to “negotiate or talk through every element”.

  5. We can lift the sanctions once Russia gave back all their occupied territoriy and fucked off back home.

  6. Lift sanctions on Russia should have massive consequences for Trump. Else He will do it.

  7. So we are now officially representing Russia? Who had that on their bingo cards?

Show of hands please…. Ok, everyone.

  8. So basically Europe is needed to save the Russian economy.
But Europe doesn’t get a say and has no reason to agree and will have to deal with more costly invasions in a few years time?

  9. Fuck off. This is battle for Britain moment and EU will stand strong.

  10. Terrible way ahead. Americans have been told for decades that Russia is the enemy. Now they’re on the ropes. This is not the time to let up. Post-war repayments/reparations should come from the aggressor nation.

  11. Absolutely not, sanction them into the stone age

  12. I don’t think so. Bloody hell what nonsense is this?

  13. I say… fuck them keep the sanctions on, after all we are not on the table, why we need to abide to what the table says.

  14. Freeze Ukraine / E.U out of talks, ‘everyone needs to be ok with this’ I don’t think the Americans understand that’s not how negotiations work

  15. Why to remove sanctions which are “not working” based on ruSSian statements?

  16. 2 things are all that’s needed for the War to stop.

Trump and his acolytes need to wipe the Russian bodily fluids out their mouths.

Russia needs to get the hell out of all of Ukraine.

  17. You want us to bankroll our own invasion?

Is the US cynical or just stupid?

  18. Sure when Russia leves Ukrainian territories, Crimea included, and pays for rebuilding the destruction they caused. Easy cheesy Russian agents.

  19. “Europe will have no place at the table in these talks but also please Europe remove the sanctions.”

    They’re delusional.

  20. It’s clear who Trump is working for. Let US remove it’s sanctions and the rest of the World should keep sanctions in place, we’ll see how it will work out for US. And if US enables Russia to avoid EU sanctions, well maybe US should be on sanctions list too. At this point why not…

Also US has no place in Ukraine war negotiations, Russia and Ukraine does. Trump is only there to get the piece of cake.

  21. The Trump Administration is obviously a Russian “active measures” operation.

  22. They just want out, at the most inopportune moment for their Allies, mainly to fulfil promises to the base and punish Zelensky

It’s weakness of vision and betrayal of treaties. From this point on the US is proven untrustworthy in future diplomacy.

Let’s hope Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan are watching and the resultant contracts from them and the EU ignore US & Swiss military suppliers. Especially if we need permission to use said arms

  23. The end of this war is easy, and completely in the hands of 1 party. Russia is sure to get back Kursk if they withdraw from all Ukrainian territories. Until Ukraine is free and in EU and NATO, I hope my EU wll keep up with sanctions, and sanction the US if they drop sanctions.

  24. Ha, we were right all along. All of this was about dropping sanctions.

  25. Ok Rubio just hand over Ukraine….stupid
NO keep sanctions and add on if you have balls

  26. Sure, seems fair once Russia returns all the land they invaded to Ukraine and repaid for all the damages and perhaps get rid of all of their Nuclear arsenal, we should lift the sanctions and guarantee their safety as long as they never invade another sovereign nation.

  27. I don’t know how Ukraine does it, but I sincerely hope Zelensky tells Trump to fuck right off with his efforts to grab and exploit Ukraine for all he can, and he tells Putin to bring it. I hate the feeling of being an American with Trump at the helm; I don’t think it’s right to join our historic enemy to punk my friends.

Russia’s not very good, only overwhelming and formidable for its size and resources. The people there could do better, but they’re not good enough to anymore.

Ideally, Europe and other sensible people can unify behind Ukraine, finally give Ukraine all it needs to end the war while it’s still in the East, and then and only then begin to negotiate terms of normalizing a new Russia with the rest of the world.

If it’s any consolation, America fucked itself, too, when it allowed Trump back into power, and the country will soon be… I don’t know… not “America” anymore.

  28. And I want the Trump team to magically disappear. We can’t have all we want unfortunately.

  29. Well of course Kremlin representatives are delighted to discuss an end to punitive measures. I am sure that the very same representatives who literally hate the U.S. – whose national media frequently display this hatred – were in best behaviour. “We understand each other better”- what nonsense. What is there to understand that was cleared up in this 4 hours? That attacking a sovereign nation is considered naughty by some in the west? That the expansion of a defensive organisation was just one of many contradictory reasons for launching war was confusing for us? That archaic Viking attitudes to war making with nukes is unsettling. That killing people with different opinions on foreign soil (let alone domestically) is not conducive to trusting diplomatic relationships? That red flag events and consistent deceit also colours any desire to negotiate in good faith?

No. I’d be all in with sustaining punitive measures.

I have no issues with discussing removal of sanctions – but obviously to do so as a gesture of good will (rather than part of an agreement that Ukraine has its territory and security guarantees genuinely restored) is to shamefully side with the bully.

If Trump lifts sanctions before Russians leave and a realistic security plan is implemented – he’s a Russian asset.

  30. So hold up, let me get this straight:

Several weeks ago Trump threatened the EU and other nations with tariffs.
Trump wants to negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump doesn’t invite Ukraine or the EU to the talks.
Trump wants the mineral rights in Ukraine for ongoing US support and security guarantees.
Trump now expects the EU to lift tariffs as part of a peace deal he never invited the EU or Ukraine to.
The peace deal seems to involve Ukraine giving up so much, and Russia giving up nothing in return.

    Is that about right?

Why are we (europe) even entertaining any of this bullshit?

Russia is clearly on the ropes economically and militarily. We only have to keep supporting Ukraine for a little longer until the Russians run out of steam, and by that point Ukraine will boot them out on their own.

Why are we letting up pressure now? Why is Trump throwing Putin a lifeline? Why are our European leaders being a bunch of cowards?

  31. I’d like to ask these scumbag Republicans why they’re in such a big hurry to take the heat off Russia. If this were WWII, Rubio would be telling Poland to stop resisting.

  32. Sanctions should only be removed once Russia leave all of Ukraine including Crimea!
