Tube workers get inflation-busting 8.4% pay rise costing TfL millions

  1. Such a bullshit headline. They’ve had a deal for pay rises linked to inflation, because they have a union that isn’t shit and ensures it’s members get good pay. They are not overpaid, everyone else is underpaid, and they have a good union. Go figure.

Edit: Man there’s some bootlicking going on in some of these responses. If you’re pissed off about the strikes getting in the way of your day (yes I also live in London, yes I am aware of strike action) then contact your MP and make it known that perhaps the government should fund it’s public transport system like, you know, every other sane country.

  2. > TfL is locked into a four-year deal with unions which guarantees workers an annual pay hike of RPI+0.2%.

So they’re getting very, very slightly more than the measure of inflation that they’ve agreed on (the same measure of inflation which the Government are happy to use when it comes to putting the cost of public transport up)?

Good. Workers shouldn’t be having their salaries cut in real terms. If more workers had contracts like this, the country would be in a much better state.

  3. Good for them, but rising labour cost only go to strengthen the urgency for rail automation.

EDIT: Loving the downvotes – does anyone really think that this won’t be the ultimate outcome of this?

  4. Good. It should go further really. It’s not really a pay rise, when its eaten up by inflation (which at this end of the spectrum is far more than 8 odd percent), plus at 0.2% above RPI, its not what anyone could call “inflation busting”, is it?

This is the reasons that unions exist.

    Join one.

  5. Fair play to them. They negotiated a deal where their pay is linked to inflation.

The best way to beat the cost of living crisis is to join a union, and encourage your colleagues to do so too!

  6. Such a toxic manipulative headline, with the sole aim of provoking outrage. I wouldn’t call a 0.2% pay rise inflation busting its only slightly ahead of inflation.

The tube unions should be used as an example of why having a unionised untied work force is something to aim for instead of being condemned and berated.

  7. Workers get slightly more than inflation pay rise shock horror!!!

Good for them, let people focus their ire on our shitty governance, rampant cronyism and corrupt politicians rather than workers getting what they deserve.

  8. Goes to show where we stand. Staying alive and warm and fed is just a “cost” for companies. One they would rather not pay.

  9. Good on them. If everyone had a union that negotiated a pay increase that matches inflation we’d all be on similar.

“Oh but the cost of tickets would increase!” I hear people cry. Prices have increased above inflation anyways. We’d just have more money to spend on tickets.

  10. Disgraceful media coverage. It’s .2 % over inflation. It’s in line with inflation, they will be just not worse off is all. Hate the media with a passion.

  11. If my pay was increased 8.4% it would make life easier for sure. I’d almost have the same earning power as I did 3 years ago!

  12. Good for them! Good for their union!

I’m waiting for the day we collectively have a ‘grasshoppers vs ants’ realisation and then everyone can be paid a suitable wage.

  13. Public sector workers deserve all the pay they get definitely not worth dealing with a lot of the public on minimum wage

  14. Happy for them. A reminder to everyone that this should be standard across all jobs. If your job is unwilling to offer you a competitive rate, you should be looking elsewhere for employment. Find a place that will go to hell and back to keep you, or a place that has a good union.
