Students and staff from North Ormesby Academy met with King Charles and Queen Camilla at an author event in Middlesbrough last week and have now spoken about their pride at winning an award.

As part of the National Literacy Trust’s ‘reading for enjoyment programme’, hundreds of school children and their teachers were invited to Middlesbrough Town Hall, where Children’s Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce led a workshop with fellow authors Nadia Shireen, James Harris, and Jennifer Bell.

Her Majesty Queen Camilla came on stage to award certificates to children who were nominated for awards by their schools, and a Year 5 pupil from North Ormesby was awarded a pin badge and certificate.

The Principal at North Ormesby Primary Academy, Helen Charlton, said: “This was such a special day for our pupils at North Ormesby and for us to recognise one of our fantastic readers at school.

“We take reading, and the love of reading seriously at our school and were delighted to be offered the chance to celebrate with the National Literacy Trust, amazing children’s authors and the Queen.

“Our pupils had a brilliant day and we are delighted that one of our pupils was awarded a ‘star reader’. All of our children should be proud of the effort and achievement they put into reading every single day.”

North Ormesby Primary Academy pupils were invited to attend the National Literacy Trust’s event, to celebrate the achievements of their reading initiative in Middlesbrough.

Although research by the National Literacy Trust last year found only a third of children aged 8 to 18 enjoy reading, 2 out of 5 pupils in Middlesbrough enjoy reading for pleasure and developing a real love for books.
